LG bucks the trend in the LED TV competition

While most HDTV manufacturers are racing to show off newer, wafer-thin edge LED panels, LG is bucking the trend by launching two traditional backlit models. Instead of emphasizing sleek designs and eco-friendliness, the Korean chaebol is pushing the performance envelope by outfitting its latest 55LH95 and 55LH93 models with seven times more LEDs than their edgelit siblings. This enables more precise backlighting control via a local dimming function that helps boost dynamic contrast to a high 5,000,000:1 rating. Both entries also feature a fast 240Hz refresh rate for smoother moving images and integrated wireless connectivity with an external media box sans any image degradation.

The 24.8mm-thin 55LH95 and 55LH93 will be rolled out in Korea from July at US$5,500 and US$5,900, respectively. The rest of Asia will have to wait and see if it gets these eventually.

Outlet Wall solves all your power needs

Matt Hickey  |  Jun 28, 2009

The Outlet Wall is a great idea. It actually looks good and is totally an exercise in function meeting fashion. If I ever get around to remodeling my place I do believe one wall will feature this setup.

It's just what it appears to be: An entire wall made of active power outlets. Imagine: No more power strips, tangled cables, or trying to make brick adapters fit where they don't want to.

Even if you don't wire all the outlets up, they still look cool. It's almost some sort of post-tech artistic statement.

Photographer David Friedman came up with this concept and posted it on his site, Ironic Sans, where he often details design and gadget ideas. Sadly, the wall does appear to be just a concept for now, but David, if you're reading this, I'd like to give you an Internet high-five.

iPod and iPhone docks into JVC's LCD HDTV

The Apple iPod phenomenon has invaded not only your ears, but also your car, your home audio system, and now your television.

JVC's LT-P300 series include some of the only TVs on the market designed specifically to work with iPods and iPhones, allowing you to charge your iPod and play back music, videos, and photos via the TV. JVC's integrated dock goes a step beyond the dongles and docks found on AV receivers such as the Pioneer VSX-1019A-HK and TVs such as the Panasonic TX-LX1 series because it actually folds out from the front of the TV for a seamless integration that should please convenience-conscious Apple fans.

Blow your trumpet with these see-through speakers

Juniper Foo  |  Jun 23, 2009

FHOO1 Horn Speaker. (Credit: Ferguson Hill)

Everything about the Brit-based Ferguson Hill speakers simply shouts supersized. Huge horns (it's 1.65m tall). Huge sounds. Huge price tag (think US$26,000, before shipping). You'll also need a huge bachelor(ette) pad (married couples aren't likely to appreciate the indulgence) to showcase this in. And huge parties so you can blow your trumpet over your ownership of said FH001 speakers.

If you like living life large and have the deep pockets to play it rich, these yummy-looking acrylic speakers should look ultra-cool with Philip's LivingColors lamp splashing palettes of light on your centerpiece. The rest of us plebians can just settle for ordinary.
