Will Wolverine benefit from (Bit)Torrent of publicity?

Outfitted with a skeleton forged from a super alloy, the comic book hero Wolverine is supposed to be indestructible.

After a raw version of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine leaked to the Web last month, 20th Century Fox is hoping the action pic, which debuts Friday, is nearly as durable.

Western Digital's WD TV gets a firmware update

If you are an owner of a WD TV (and I really believe you should be one if you already have an LCD or plasma TV), I have some good news.

Western Digital just released Friday an update for the device's firmware, to version 1.02.07. The main improvement in this the addition of built-in codecs and better audio support for the MKV file. This is the file format that's popularly used to store compressed high-definition content such as that of Blu-ray movies, much similar to the DivX format that's used to store compressed DVD movies.

The WD TV is the only computer-agnostic player I know that supports the MKV file format well. You can view the complete list of improvements in this update here (PDF file).

The update process is simple; you just download the update provided in the ZIP file, decompress it and put the firmware file onto a USB external hard drive. Plug the drive into the WD TV, turn it on, then use the remote control to navigate to the "Settings" section of the device. The rest is self-explanatory.

The new version 1.02.07 firmware update of the WD TV can be downloaded for free here.

New motion-sensing controller for PS3 at E3?

Philip Wong  |  May 04, 2009

Will there be a new DualShock for this coming E3 Expo?
(Credit: Sony)

Rumors about a new motion-sensing controller for the PlayStation 3 have surfaced lately. This coincides with the upcoming E3 Expo taking place from June 2 to 4 in Los Angeles. According to online reports, Sony and game developers have been taking about integrating this motion-sensing capability into their upcoming titles. The latest development may be a direct response to an earlier Nintendo announcement on the company's Wii MotionPlus module. Having said that, it's seems strange that Sony is producing yet another motion-sensing device when its current SixAxis and DualShock 3 controllers have had this function all along--a feature which is not prominently implemented on most existing PS3 games.

Onkyo TX-SR607 has six HDMI inputs, stellar sound

Matthew Moskovciak  |  May 04, 2009

When Onkyo announced the TX-SR607, the company made a big deal that it was the first A/V receiver to include onboard Dolby Pro Logic IIz processing. Dolby's new format relies on "height" speakers--two satellite speakers situated above the standard front right/left speakers--to create a more "airy" soundscape--or at least that's the idea. We tried our best to enjoy the extra atmospheric effects, but the reality is our ears had a tough time hearing anything beyond placebo effects. But honestly, who cares? The Onkyo TX-SR607 is a great midrange A/V receiver without Pro Logic IIz, offering up six HDMI inputs and excellent sound quality at a US street price that is already down to US$500 online.

If you're looking for more video-centric features like a graphical user interface or high quality analog video upconversion, it may be smart to hold off until the Sony STR-DN1000 and Pioneer VSX-1019AH are released. But if you'd rather maximize your HDMI connectivity and sound quality on a budget, it's tough to beat the TX-SR607.

Another TV manufacturer is eyeing the potentially lucrative OLED TV market. This time we've Panasonic announcing its plans to launch a panel within the next 18 to 24 months. Developed in collaboration with Toshiba, the Panasonic pilot offering will be a sizeable 37-incher shipped in a 1-inch-thick chassis. Furthermore, the Japanese company is working on extending the panel lifespan from the current 20,000 hours to 50,000 hours.
