World's first projector with integrated messaging

Philip Wong  |  May 08, 2009

The S$3,499 (US$2,484.91) IN3108 is the American company's latest flagship DLP light cannon endowed with a slew of office productivity features. Its high 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution and 3,500 lumens output give this multimedia projector abundant headroom in conference room installations. Setup is a breeze, thanks to the IN3108's DisplayLink function with zero configuration USB audio-video playback, now upgraded with Windows and Mac computer-compatibility.

In addition, this InFocus can support its optional LiteShow II wireless adapter for cordless presentation and is likely the world's first projector with integrated messaging system. The latter allows an administrator to broadcast news and other content to one or an entire network of these beamers.

Connectivity-wise, there's a pair of PC inputs, as well as an HDMI 1.3 terminal and other legacy A/V jacks. The IN308 now ships to Singapore, though we have no further details for the rest of Asia.

Blu-ray player sales on the rise, report says

Eric Franklin  |  May 07, 2009
I haven't bought a DVD in more than a year. Since getting a PlayStation 3--which plays Blu-ray Discs--I just find it difficult to justify paying a slightly lower price (for a DVD) for a noticeably lower-quality picture.

It wasn't always that way. There was a time when I didn't understand the appeal of Blu-ray. Now, it's difficult for me to even watch a standard DVD. Even the Lord of the Rings trilogy--which was the Holy Grail for me for DVD picture quality only a few years back--disappoints me to watch.

It appears I'm not alone. According to a report released Wednesday by market research firm The NPD Group, first-quarter 2009 sales of standalone Blu-ray players (read: Not including the PS3) in the US surpassed 400,000 units, an increase of 72 percent over the first quarter of 2008. Dollar sales increased 14 percent, to reach US$107.2 million.

103-inch plasma TV: A good reason to be rich?

Eric Franklin  |  May 07, 2009

The BeoVision 4...it's thinking. (Credit: Bang & Olufsen)

As Americans, many of us believe we'll be rich one day. Seriously, many of us believe it's only a matter of time before our ship comes rolling in and we'll be jet-skiing with bikini-clad models like the best of the rich folk.

Now there's a new reason to hold out hope. Bang & Olufsen just launched the BeoVision 4-103. It's an US$111,805, 584lb, 103-inch plasma TV with a full-HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. A TV that says to the world: "Look what a huge tool I am, that I would spend over US$100,000 on a *beep* TV." I think that may actually be engraved somewhere on the system.

Not to say B&O isn't throwing in the bells and whistles to get the hard sell for this TV. Other than the ginormous screen, there are a couple of features included that sound really cool.

Is MotionPlus too little, too late for Nintendo?

Jeff Bakalar  |  May 06, 2009

But as far as the idea of motion control is concerned, is it as satisfying as hoped? (Credit: Nintendo)

With the arrival of Wii MotionPlus, Nintendo promises even more accurate motion control for Wii games that are developed with the hardware in mind. Unfortunately, this means that all games developed up until now cannot benefit from MotionPlus in any way, shape, or form.

But is all this too little, too late for Nintendo? There's no denying that the Wii is popular; it's the best selling console by far this generation with supply only just recently catching up with demand. But as far as the idea of motion control is concerned, is it as satisfying as we all had hoped?

We're not saying motion control doesn't work. It has done wonders for balance games like Super Monkey Ball and has really shined in the first-person-shooter department with titles like House of the Dead Overkill and the yet to be released The Conduit.

Panasonic says no to DMP-BD80 for Asia

Philip Wong  |  May 05, 2009

(Credit: Panasonic)

If you're still holding back for the US$399.95 Panasonic DMP-BD80, enticed by the company's strong track record in Blu-ray players, don't. According to a reliable source, Panasonic will not be releasing its flagship model in Asia outside of Japan and the US. Instead, we'd suggest settling for the leaner US$299.95 DMP-BD60 which debuts in Singapore soon. The two models are actually similar in specifications with the primary difference being the connectivity. For instance, the BD80 adds 7.1-channel discreet analog audio for legacy A/V receiver compatibility as well as coaxial digital audio output.

More importantly, you'll still get Panasonic's proprietary PHL Reference Chroma video processor plus designed to boost DVD-upscaling performance. Click here for our full review on the DMP-BD60 to help you in your purchase decision. Note that the above-mentioned pricing is based on the US retail price.
