Samsung plasma TV gets double accelerations and IDTV

Philip Wong  |  May 26, 2009

Plasma TVs with 600Hz sub-field drives for improved motion fluidity are commonly available nowadays. However, the Samsung PS42B430P2M is bringing the competition to a whole new level by applying its 100Hz technology on top of the 600Hz processing. While we can't guarantee smoother and sharper moving images without a hands-on, these tweaks on paper definitely sound promising for an entry-level model that costs S$1,699 (US$1,206.59).

Baby HDTV offers Blu-ray recording

Flat-panel HDTVs with integrated Blu-ray players are nothing new, but a petite 20-incher with HD recording is a different proposition altogether. The upcoming Sharp Aquos LC-20DX1 sets the bar in personal entertainment with an onboard Blu-ray digital video recorder which can record up to 7 hours of high-definition broadcasts. Available in black and white finish, this model features a 1,366 x 768-pixel panel and a respectable 7,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

The LC-20DX1 should be an interesting multifunctional display for Japanese consumers living in space-constrained apartments in major cities such as Tokyo. After all, you'll get Blu-ray, DVD and CD playback, video recording, digital TV tuners and a digital audio amplifier cramped inside a compact package. We've not received any news on the LC-20DX1's availability outside of Japan, but it will be launched there from June 20.

Aussies cram 2,000 movies onto single DVD

Eric Franklin  |  May 22, 2009

Last month, GE revealed that its research scientists had discovered a way, using holographic technology, to store 100 DVDs worth of information on a single standard DVD. What a difference a few weeks make.

In what can only be seen as a "serving" (or pwning) of the GE researchers, the B-Boys researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, have gone way past 100 and on to 2,000.

While standard DVDs are made with three spatial dimensions, the Aussie researchers added two more.

Using nanoparticles--extremely small bits of matter--the Swinburne team was able to introduce a spectral (or color) dimension and a polarization dimension.

Yet another electronics warehouse fair in Singapore

Philip Wong  |  May 21, 2009

Though the global economy looks bleak enough without the swine flu epidemic aggravating the situation, there's one bright spot for shoppers. With everyone throwing warehouse parties these days to snag consumer pockets, there's never been a better time to shop for electronics goods in Singaproe. Apart from the usual four PC fairs each year that see a gathering of key consumer electronics brands under one roof, there's been a noticeable trend for retailers to venture outside of their usual sales channels and platforms.

Only last month, bargain hunters had a field day at Court's first-ever warehouse sale of branded tech products. Now, here's another slated for the weekend, called License 2 Play. Advertised as a gaming and electronics fair, this runs at Suntec City Level 6, at Hall 603, from May 22 to 24. If this trend is indicative of the shape of tech retail to come, shoppers looking for a deals can expect to be seriously spoilt for choice. Though how this cannibalizing of consumer wallets will impact the four PC shows remains to be seen.

Sales show PS3 outsold again--now by the PS2

Matt Hickey  |  May 21, 2009

Outsold by the PS2. This is not a repeat from 2002.

I'm starting to feel bad for Sony and the PS3 camp. I really am. Sales figures from The NPD Group, a prominent business research firm, show the three top spots for April's console sales went, respectively, to Nintendo for the DS, Wii, and DSi.

Then came Microsoft with the Xbox 360. Finally, Sony rounds out the rest, with the PS3 coming in sixth--behind its predecessor, the PS2. Ouch.

Of course, this likely has much to do with the price drop we reported on more than a month ago that took the PS2 to the US$99.99 mark, a significant price point.
