Next big PS3 price cut set for April?

David Carnoy  |  Jan 14, 2009

No shocker: More talk of a price drop on the 80GB version of the PS3.
(Credit: Sony)

This rumor's a little dubious, but several blogs are reporting that Sony plans to cut the PlayStation's 3's price tag by US$100 in April. That would put the 80GB PS3 at US$300. The source: An analyst at Wedbush Morgan who's also saying that Microsoft will chop US$50 off the Xbox 360 Pro around E3 2009 (in June), putting that system at US$250.

When it comes to gaming systems, price drops are the equivalent of an economic stimulus plan, and breaking US$300 would obviously make the PS3 attractive to a whole new batch of consumers, regardless of poor economic conditions. Price points are price points and things start getting pretty magical when you get under US$300 (and in the case of the Xbox 360, US$250 is even better).

Naturally, it doesn't take a rocket scientist--or an analyst at an investment firm--to figure any of this out. And giving yourself a nice four-month buffer to predict a price drop doesn't exactly impress. But people love to speculate on this sort of stuff, and with word that Sony will report a big US$1.1 billion operating loss for 2007/2008 (its first operating loss in 14 years), the pressure's on Sony to rev up its Playstation 3 franchise for the health of the company and its Blu-ray platform (yes, the PS3 has a built-in Blu-ray player, lest you forgot).

CES 2009: Gaming wrap-up

Jeff Bakalar  |  Jan 13, 2009
CES 2009
It's no secret that gaming's presence at CES can barely be felt, but we were lucky enough to find some diamonds in the rough, including a few that made us want to phone a lawyer.

While there was no new gaming software to be found, there was a respectable amount of gaming hardware and accessories that stole our attention. Nyko stood out with the company's Wand and Kama Charge Kit and Mad Catz showed off Street Fighter IV-branded FightPads and FightSticks. We were wowed by the Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision, but unfortunately getting it all set up requires a few expensive addons.

We were upset to see a lack of products devoted solely to game consoles like we had originally anticipated. So where does this leave gaming's future at CES? Believe it or not, gaming actually had more of a showing at this year than it did in '08, so we'd imagine to see an incremental increase next year. Keep in mind, a lot of third-party hardware and accessories are a result of the Wii, a console that lends itself very well to the production of such items.

Fancy using your PS3 controller for PC gaming?

Philip Wong  |  Jan 13, 2009

Here's a quick backgrounder. A Japanese software programmer has released Microsoft Windows XP/Vista drivers for PlayStation 3's SixAxis and DualShock3 controllers. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has never released the relevant software to enable its controllers for PC gaming. These unofficial drivers are a stop gap which also unlocks force feedback function, though compatibility is limited to wired USB operation only at the moment.

You can download the drivers here with instructions courtesy of the nice folks from the DCemu UK forum. We've test-driven them on our Lab's SixAxis controller but to no avail, though there are some successful examples in the above-mentioned discussion. No harm trying anyway.

A projector that fits in your pocket, remember not to sit on it

Eric Franklin  |  Jan 12, 2009

Either that is a huge hand or, (more likely) the projector is tiny.

CES 2009
I'm not certain if this has truly never been accomplished before, but BenQ is claiming that their new GP1 is the world's first LED pocket projector with an integrated USB reader. According to BenQ, users will be able to run movies, slides or whatever they want simply by plugging a USB thumb drive in, with no need for a separate PC.

In addition, GP1 users will be able to connect digital cameras, PDAs, iPods, iPhones, Smartphones, gaming consoles and laptops for viewing projected from 10 inches, up to an 80-inch diagonal size and it will project sound through its integrated speaker.

Gefen debuts wireless HDMI kit

Philip Wong  |  Jan 12, 2009

CES 2009
Here's another alternative to the US$1,499 Belkin FlyWire. For US$500 less, you get a similar wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver pair capable of supporting uncompressed 1080p signals. The catch is you'll get only two HDMIs and a single set of component-video inputs instead of the former's three/two combination. Based on the company’s press release, this product has an effective 10m line-of-sight range and is HDMI 1.3-compliant with auto audio lip synchronization compatibility.

For home entertainment buffs looking for a complete audio-visual solution, this US$999 kit is also 5.1-channel surround sound-enabled. You can even hook up an A/V receiver between its HDMI output and a display for decoding Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks as well. Gefen did not release any information on Asia pricing and availability at press time.
