What was missing from the Nintendo E3 press conference

Jeff Bakalar  |  Jul 16, 2008
The Nintendo press conference at E3 2008 just ended and we're left scratching our heads. While we were glad to see the announcement of titles like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, hardcore gamers loyal to the Nintendo brand were completely left in the dust. There was no talk of any first-party Nintendo games beyond the Wii-branded Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music. There was absolutely no mention of new franchises like Kid Icarus or even anything from the Zelda or Mario camp. This has everyone in the office wondering, "where are the games"?

Also surprisingly, Nintendo did not address the crucial issue of system storage. With the release of WiiWare, Wii owners are quickly running out of space to download and save games. What most thought was a shoe-in to be announced at the Nintendo press conference went totally unmentioned. Nintendo didn't even tease any upcoming WiiWare games.

Nintendo announces Wii MotionPlus

Jeff Bakalar  |  Jul 16, 2008
Nintendo has just lifted the veil on a new accessory for the Nintendo Wii remote control. The Wii MotionPlus adapter will attach to the bottom of the Wii remote and give the player a more accurate sense of control by better measuring movements in a 3D space.

Sounds like this could be a blessing for those first-person-shooter games where the control may have been off a step or two. We'll have more on MotionPlus and when you can expect a review soon. Now, here's the press release:

Nintendo introduces the Wii MotionPlus
July 14, 2008

Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

StarHub gears up for more HD programs

Philip Wong  |  Jul 15, 2008

The Singapore HD broadcast scene is gearing up for a showdown with StarHub, firing yet another salvo at the opposing red camp. The cable TV service provider has just announced its latest plans to go high-definition for the new 2008/2009 Barclays Premier League and US PGA Tour events. Even better, its Sport Group subscribers will get to enjoy these programs free as long as they own an HD settop box.

This latest development follows the company's recent announcement to carry local MediaCorp's free-to-air HD5 HDTV content. It seems the telco is stepping up on the offensive, too, with a fifth HD channel in the pipeline. That said, its existing HD Showcase preview channel will be discontinued come August. HD5 on StarHub channel 300 and Sports HD on channel 304 are slated for launch on July 28 and August 14, respectively.

Batman Begins on Blu-ray: Dark Knight preview kicks Bat-ass

Ian Morris  |  Jul 15, 2008
There have been far too many truly cack superhero movies. Even the otherwise brilliant Batman franchise lost its way with Batman and Robin which, despite Alicia Silverstone, was a bloody mess. When Batman Begins came out, we were frankly amazed that director Christopher Nolan had brought it back to the level of Tim Burton's films, albeit with a very different approach. Now it's finally touching down in the UK on Blu-ray for the first time--previously it was available on HD-DVD and as a US import.

It's worth saying at the outset that there's one thing on this Blu-ray which makes it very exciting, indeed, namely a 6-minute preview of the new film The Dark Knight, which is the opening scene of the new movie. We won't spoil it, but our mouths were hanging open and our blood pressure was through the roof. You'll watch it at least 40 times--it might be the best disc extra ever. If you aren't excited about the new movie yet, you damn well should be!

Kodak's answer to Apple TV: The Theatre HD Player

David Carnoy  |  Jul 15, 2008
I'm not sure whether I should call the new Theatre HD Player Kodak's answer to Apple TV, but that's the best analogy I can come up with on short notice. Whether it is or not, Kodak is doing its best to get into your living room with a little Wi-Fi-enabled black box that connects to your HDTV, displays images and other multimedia content, and links directly to Kodak Gallery, the company's online photo-sharing service, and Flickr. Due to roll out in September, the Theatre HD Player will retail for US$299.99 and continue to add features through firmware upgrades after it's launched.

Kodak calls the Theatre HD Player, "an interactive device displaying personal content--pictures, video, podcasts, music--and Web-based content on a HDTV, while wirelessly connecting to a household's private Wi-Fi network". In a nod to the Nintendo Wii's popularity, Kodak includes gyroscopic remote, and you navigate the onscreen menus much like you would with the Wiimote. Like Apple, Kodak has an alliance with YouTube for video content. RadioTime is onboard for streaming audio.
