Datacolor Spyder3TV: Improving your TV picture quality

Ian Morris   |  Jul 21, 2008
When we review a TV, we almost always end up saying: "You'll need to spend some time setting this up properly so the picture doesn't end up looking like a dog's dinner." The problem is, unless you spend a lot of time setting up TVs, you might not really know what to adjust and by how much.

Happily, a company called Datacolor has produced something called Spyder3TV with one goal in mind: Get your TV set up perfectly by guiding you through the adjustment of color, brightness, sharpness and temperature settings on your TV. It does this via a little device you hook into a computer using USB and stick with a suction cup to the front of your TV.

Wood guitar controller aims for more authentic rocking

Leslie Katz  |  Jul 21, 2008
For those true-blue rockers who might frown on a (gasp!) plastic guitar controller, gaming peripheral maker Peak Products is out with the Starpex, which it says is the first-ever full-size wood guitar controller for the PS2/PS3.

The idea here is that a more authentic-feeling instrument can make you feel even more rock star-esque than you already do as you shred your way through the popular Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles. Peak Products says Starpex has an instrument-quality hardwood body, neck, and headstock handcrafted by a leading guitar manufacturer, which as of now, shall apparently remain unnamed.

AMD quitting handheld, TV chips amid more losses

Tom Krazit  |  Jul 18, 2008
AMD continues to stumble through another down year.

The company announced along with the release of its second-quarter earnings results Thursday that it is getting out of the handheld and digital television businesses. As has been the case for the last several quarters, AMD is continuing to lose bucketloads of money: US$1.2 billion this time around.

The US$1.2 billion isn't as bad as it looks at first glance, but it's still pretty bad. In order to get out of the business of making graphics chips for handhelds and digital TV processors, AMD has to take a one-time charge of US$876 million, which accounts for the majority of the loss.

The charge relates to the amount of goodwill attached to the company's US$5.4 billion purchase of ATI Technologies in 2006: goodwill is an accounting term that in this case, stands for "the amount by which we overpaid." AMD attached US$3.2 billion in goodwill to the ATI merger, and has now written US$2.5 billion of that goodwill off its balance sheet with the divestiture of the former ATI's consumer chip business.

Nintendo: Wii grabs top spot in next-gen console wars

Daniel Terdiman  |  Jul 18, 2008
On Monday morning in Los Angeles, attendees at Microsoft's E3 press conference heard Xbox head Don Mattrick "declare" that that video game console would win the so-called next-generation console war.

But if the latest sales data put out by NPD mean anything, Microsoft's road to victory could be a little harder. That's because, according to Nintendo, the Wii in June surpassed the Xbox 360 to become the best-selling next-generation console in the US.

According to Nintendo, NPD's numbers show that during June, the Wii hit 10.9 million units sold in the US.

E3 2008: Prince of Persia

Jeff Bakalar  |  Jul 18, 2008

The Prince of Persia series found much success in the previous generation of video games. Now Ubisoft is back with a new Prince of Persia--complete with a unique art style and a brand-new fighting mechanic. You'll also be joined by a Elika, a female character who helps you fight enemies and solve puzzles. Prince of Persia is set to release by year's end for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
