JBL bends new Control Now speaker

The latest JBL Control Now is quite a versatile speaker featuring a 90 degree-angled profile and wide sound field coverage. It can be mounted either on a table, wall, ceiling or on dedicated stands, or pieced together for a variety of installation options. Think a three-piece combo for wall corners or full circular ring to deliver omni 360-degree sounds. You'll also have a choice of a black or white shade to blend seamlessly into your home décor.

Each of these two-way speakers sports twin 100mm woofers and a 19mm tweeter, has a pretty extended 80Hz to 30KHz frequency response, and can take up to 300W of audio amplification. The indoor Control Now will go on sale in the US at US$249 each, while its outdoor equivalent costs another US$30 extra. For now, those in Asia will have to get this online or on their next US trip.

Free UEFA EURO matches coming your way

You may have recalled our past coverage on Singapore StarHub's UEFA EURO 2008 offerings and promise of free matches. The latter is now official with a recent announcement detailing the four games to be broadcast for all households throughout the island. The cable TV operator kicks off the program schedule with an opening match between Switzerland and Czech Republic on June 8. This will be followed by two back-to-back semi-final matches on June 26 and 27, leading to the finals on June 30.

Two methods are available to tune in to the complimentary soccer action. For its existing Digital Cable subscribers, the four matches will be televised via its Preview Channel on Channel 1. If you're not on its cable TV, you could manually dial in to the UHF frequency 527.25Mhz to receive the broadcast. Refer to your TV user manual for more details. Alternatively, viewers seeking technical clarification can call its hotline at 6873-2828.

Another IDTV. This time, a Sharp Aquos

It's sure taken TV manufacturers a while to warm up to Asian digital broadcasts. The latest to join the fray is Sharp with its upcoming D83-series Aquos. Details are sketchy, but what we have established is that it will come with onboard analog and DVB-T tuners. Unlike the Samsung and LG IDTVs, Sharp has it right from the very beginning by going with dual antenna inputs. This means you can enjoy the best of both worlds without the hassle of hot-swapping TV aerials.

In addition, it's retrofitted with an MPEG-4 decoder for receiving HD broadcasts such as Singapore's MediaCorp HD5. Having said that, we weren't particularly impressed with its HDMI trio and modest 10,000:1 dynamic contrast. On the brighter side, it does feature future-proofed full-HD resolution, 100Hz Fine Motion Advanced frame rate doubling and a fast 4ms response time to boot.

Besides the D83, there's also the RX 65-inch mammoth with identical specs plus an upgraded 15,000:1 dynamic contrast. Both are slated for a Singapore launch end June. If you can't wait any longer, check out the recently debuted LC-32D30M instead. This bedroom-centric model has black, white and red contrasting bezels and goes for S$1,499 (US$1,064.93) a set. Other specs include 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution and a respectable 7,500:1 dynamic contrast for this entry-level. Bookmark this space for updates.
