Score a free LCD TV if you're game

Philip Wong  |  Feb 27, 2007

There is no better time to show the creativity in you now that Microsoft is offering attractive prizes for its latest WebVid competition. This Internet campaign will pit entries from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore for the top 10 spots, to be voted online by Asian consumers with the winners announced by May 7.

According to the guidelines, you should be shooting and submitting your homemade clip via www.whatswrongwithu.com between now and April 20. The top 10 winners have a chance to take home an Xbox 360 and game bundle, while the first three highest-ranking videos bag an LCD TV, too. Now where do we sign up?

Sony PlayStation 3 officially sets foot in Singapore; about time, too

Edvarcl Heng  |  Feb 22, 2007

The game's on, guys. Sony has finally announced that it will be retailing the long-awaited PS3 in Singapore on March 7. Singapore gamers who have been dying to experience Ridge Racer 7 on their HDTVs will no longer have to beg, borrow or steal (not necessarily in that order) from friends in Hong Kong. In fact, preorders start today, and gamers can visit selected game shops in the Republic or dial 800-852-3663 to plonk down their orders.

But hold on to your vibrating controllers. Along with the spiffy black Blu-ray machine, Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong will debut the PlayStation Store, an online portal from which users can download HD films and free trial games, much like the Xbox Live service. A free download of the cult racing hit, Grand Turismo, will be made available to celebrate the launch, though we have doubts as to the download speed.

And that's not all, gaming folks. Ten PS3 games will be on hand for purchase such as Resistance: Fall of Man and Mobile Suit Gundam Target in Sight. The 60GB version of the PS3 will be retailing at S$799 (US$573.95). No word on the 20GB version at press time, though.

So gentlemen, start your engines.

Meanwhile check out the pricing details for the available game titles.

Genji: Days of the Blade S$42 (US$30.17)
Enchant Arm S$80 (US$57.47)

MTVs coming to you on Xbox

Philip Wong  |  Feb 09, 2007

Starting today, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan Xbox 360 gamers on Live Marketplace will have access to another value-added service for free music video (MV) and interview downloads. Kickstarting the Artist aXcess initiative are young talents Tata Young, Jason Chan and Evan Yo from international label Sony BMG. Plans are already in the pipeline for other artists to come onboard, bringing even more up-to-date Asia-centric content to its regional customers.

Currently, the lineup features MV clips from the individual artists including the new Star TV theme song Come Rain, Come Shine!. There is also a video on The Making of the Stubborn MV and an exclusive interview with Chan. Xbox gamers can log on and start downloading the free clips now.

From metal to plastic, and now wood!

Philip Wong  |  Feb 01, 2007

Forget fancy glass panels. LG is going environmentally friendly with its upcoming wooden plasma TV. First reported by CNET Crave UK back in late 2006, the Korean chaebol is apparently ready to ship a 60-inch model for the Korean market as early as March.

While wooden TVs may sound like a new fad for the uninitiated, a Swedish company called SWEDEX has actually beaten LG with its own line of wooden products. These range from large-screen LCD TVs and monitors to keyboards and mice.

There is one minor concern for folks here in the humid tropics, though. Does the product warranty cover the unlikely event of a termite attack?

Sleeping with your TV

Philip Wong  |  Feb 01, 2007

Have you ever had the painful experience of your expensive tech toys being vandalized by your very own toddlers? How about the scratch marks on your super-sized flat-panel turned race course, left by those Matchbox die-casts? Since we reckon you can't lock up that huge 50-inch mammoth, why not conceal them from preying eyes with MK 1 Studio's Underbed Lift?

An oversized edition of the common A/V mounting arm, it's capable of stowing a 50-inch panel under a king-sized bed with only 8-inch of clearance. What's more, it can be deployed under 45 seconds and comes with built-in swivel capability for that picture-perfect viewing angle. It's, nevertheless, a shame that this innovative product is available only in the US. Tough luck, folks.
