BenQ W10000 rocks the boat!

Philip Wong  |  Jan 30, 2007

BenQ has done it again! This time with its attractively priced W10000 full-HD projector going for a ridiculous S$7,999 (US$5,759.65)! This pricing is thousands of dollars off from its closest DLP counterpart and dangerously close to unseating the affordability champion from its rival LCD camp.

An upgraded model based on its award-winning PE8720, the W10000 offers an identical feature set to the former, including the renowned DCDi video-processing plus updated capabilities. Most notable is the DarkChip3 engine for a native 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution and future-proofed 1080p HDMI.

Another interesting addition is the provision for Imaging Science Foundation (ISF)-certified calibration. This should appeal to purists with an eye for Hollywood-tuned hues, made possible by onsite video calibration services provided by trained ISF professionals.

Expect the BenQ W10000 to hit Singapore retail shelves in mid-February.

Gaming without borders

Philip Wong  |  Jan 29, 2007

Come February 1, casual gaming will never be the same once you jump aboard StarHub's PlayingTV triple-play service. Play the challenging Sudoku puzzle or the popular Carrot Mania on Ice anytime, anywhere on TVs, mobiles and computers. Best of all, you could pick up from where you ended without the hassle of starting a game from scratch. A thoughtful touch for casual gamers on-the-go and commuters on a lookout for alternative entertainments.

Other enhancements slated for development include more game lineups, contests, real-time leader boards and multiplayer games for an even better immersive gaming experience. This cross-platform capability will be implemented as a value-added service at no extra charge for all PlayingTV subscribers, though a monthly fee of S$8.40 (US$6.05) for the latter applies. This is in addition to regular mobile data traffic surcharges for game downloads, etc.

Nintendo's new flab buster

Philip Wong  |  Jan 23, 2007

American Mickey DeLorenzo has refuted the common "no pain, no gain" notion by being the first video gamer to combine gaming with a weight loss routine. It all started out as an experiment with his fiancee, slugging it out virtually on a Wii Sports boxing game, thanks to Nintendo Wii's innovative motion-sensitive controllers.

The breath-gasping, sweat-inducing session eventually evolved into a daily 30-minute affair. This saw his weight plummeting just after a mere 21 hours of gameplay, shedding an impressive 4kg without the assistance of dieting and slimming pills. The beaming DeLorenzo has since chronicled his progress on his blog, together with charts and photos of his achievements.

The man has more than what he bargained for, receiving a job offer from a fitness Web site and making headlines online. Like American Idol reject William Hung, the entrepreneur has been quick to capitalize on his new-found fame, registering the Internet address WiiWorkout.net which links currently to his blog.

Just in case you are wondering, Nintendo has yet to contact DeLorenzo for product endorsement or any business proposition, though he reckons a workout game is probably in the pipeline from the Japanese manufacturer.

So what are you waiting for, all you diet fanatics?

PaneLock Security System

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 17, 2007

In defense of Barbie, Ken did it! But just in case, here's something to lock down that expensive, new full-HD LCD/plasma TV you just purchased. Assuming the crooks aren't D.I.Y. enthusiasts, the PaneLock utilizes theft-resistant clips to lock down the mounting bracket arms of your flat panel to rods on a wall plate. There's just one tiny catch. This works with only the company's CTM and PCM mounts. So you probably need to get these as well, or head for a home improvement store to custom-make your own mounts to measure. Hopefully, there's a way to undo the whole shebang if you ever plan on redecorating.

Price: US$9.99

Heavy-duty 1080p projector

Philip Wong  |  Jan 16, 2007

Probably the second 1080p LCD entry to reach Singapore shores, the latest Panasonic PT-AE1000 scores another first with its combination of affordability and connectivity. While not exactly the lowest-priced model out in the market, this S$7,999 (US$5,759.65) shooter beats the competition with four 1080p sockets supporting 24, 50 and 60Hz signals. That’s two HDMI and dual component-video sockets future-proofed to handle just about all known HD signals.

That's not all, folks. The company is also throwing in a whole suite of value-added and luxury functions. Most notable is the powered 2x zoom and focus capability for hassle-free image adjustment, plus a customary wide lens shift for ultimate installation flexibility. For the figure-conscious, this baby is also capable of putting out a high 11,000:1 contrast performance coupled with a competent 1,100 ANSI lumens brightness.
