Beep beep! It would seem that three Warner Bros. employees have done a Road Runner on both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD camps. Taking the middle road, the new patent may just outpace the bitter rivalry between these two disc technologies.
According to the patent filing, the new disc will have data written on different strata on the disc, with Blu-Ray content written 0.1mm from the disc surface and HD-DVD 0.6mm away. The innovation involves the use of a reflective film which reflects enough light to allow a Blu-Ray to read the data from the first layer while still allowing adequate light to pass through to pick the HD-DVD content from the second layer.
No word on when the new DVD will enter production.
