Prepara's plant growing machine

Your own indoor garden, minus the dirt and soil. (Credit: Prepara)

It's hard to ignore the incessant messages to buy local, plant a garden, check for organic labels, and lead a sustainable lifestyle, yet most of us dismiss these suggestions as practices that require too much money, time, and effort.

And it's true--they really do.

Last summer I went through a green phase, heading to the plant store to purchase soil, seeds, shovels, pots, and everything else that Martha Stewart suggests I buy. Well, US$120 and two weeks later, I had forgotten I'd even planted a garden and deemed my project a failure.

Modular, stackable fridge concept

John Chan  |  Jul 23, 2009

The Flatshare Fridge is a concept design by Stefan Buchberger and is a modular refrigerator system. If you are living with roommates, this will give each member a separate space and can possibly reduce conflict from grocery disputes. Each section can be customized with different skins and addons, so you can personalize your own chilled cabinet. There's no mention on the site, but we think it'll be great if the modules came with locks, too, so you never have to worry about roomies pinching your food.

Port-a-Pint converts into beer glass at a flick

Juniper Foo  |  Jul 16, 2009

I'm a softie for collapsible utensils. There's just something so compact and clever about the whole idea. Which was why I caved and meekly paid up for four Tupperware FlatOuts in different sizes. Four may be overdoing it in my books, but how cool is it when you can save storage space by collapsing these adjustable containers? Now, here comes another one, this time for the tipple-imbibing crowd. The convertible beer glass should appeal to the Transformers geek in us, and should impress your beer buddies, at least the first time round when, with a flick of the wrist, this morphs from small cylinder to supersized glass.

Mirror, mirror, on the... ironing board?

Matt Hickey  |  Jul 16, 2009

I'm a bachelor. As such, I always look a bit off (I don't own a full-length mirror) and my clothes are wrinkled (I don't own an ironing board). So when my editor forwarded me a link from Boing Boing Gadgets about this combo ironing board/full-length mirror I figured she was giving me a hint. Thankfully she just wanted to share it with all of you.

And look how cool it is. In an urban apartment like mine, every square inch is valuable. That's why items with dual (or more!) uses are so great. And this one has a theme: Making you look better. That's awesome.

Bandai's Gyoza Maker for the dumpling fan

Juniper Foo  |  Jul 08, 2009

It's all in the wrist. Just crank it up for instant gyoza, almost. (Credit: Bandai)

How hard is it to make dumplings? The chefs at the DinTaiFung dumpling chain with a global foodie following will tell you it requires superb folding skills to ensure each meat pocket has a minimum of 18 folds to keep in the hot soup and hold it all together. Such handmade delicacy is why food writer Anthony Bourdain claimed he'd travel halfway round the world to eat.
