Found on HP's support site is a document revealing that the Microsoft Outlook setup will not be available on the Getting Started CD shipped with every HP iPaq manufactured after March 2007. Because it is a support document, the solution given there is that customers who need Outlook will have to purchase a copy separately from Microsoft.
Windows Mobile device manufacturers usually bundle a standalone copy of Outlook for those customers who may not use the Microsoft Office suite (of which Outlook is a component). This means extra cost for those without Outlook as it is necessary for syncing of contacts, emails and calendar information. When contacted, HP was not yet able to comment on the reasons for this exclusion, or whether it will result in a reduction of the iPaqs' prices. Also, it is unsure whether the move affects all iPaqs or just those shipped in the US. More information to follow as it becomes available.
Handheld maker Palm has announced at the CTIA Wireless Show in Orlando, Florida, that it will provide an update to Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 OS for its Treo 750 customers worldwide later this year. According to the press release, the software upgrade will also add High-speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) capability to the Treo 750, but this seems to be applicable to AT&T customers only. Palm could not comment on whether HSDPA will be added to its Treo 750 PDA-phones via the update when asked at press time.
Announced at CeBit 2007 is the E-Ten glofiish X800 which runs on the latest Windows Mobile 6.0 platform and supports a broad range of connectivity options including 3G and HSDPA. Now, that's one up on the Asus P526 spotted earlier also at the show.
The glofiish X800 measures 113.5 x 60.5 x 15.8mm with a form factor similar to the earlier X500. According to the press release, the X800 features a large VGA screen that displays up to four times the resolution of previous E-Ten handsets. The X800 also connects to Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices, and comes with onboard GPS capabilities. A 2-megapixel autofocus camera at the back keeps photographers happy, while a front-mounted lens allows for video calls. The E-Ten glofiish X800 is expected to be available in Asia sometime in July this year.
Spotted at CeBIT by our sister site CNET UK is the new P526 from Asus. Updated from the P525 with a new design including a scroll wheel, the P526 also comes with Windows Mobile 6.0 (WM6). What's more, it features GPS aside from its current crop of built-in non-cellular wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and infrared). The P526 will be available in June, and may be one of the earliest handhelds to sport WM6.

Spending money on a Webcam may not be justified for those who do video calls once in a long while. Ateksoft WebCamera Plus 1.05 could be the answer to that, an application for Windows Mobile devices that turns the handheld's camera into a Webcam. Desktop programs supported include popular ones like Skype, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. This isn't freeware, but at US$19.90, it is still significantly cheaper than a dedicated Webcam.
