Study: Smartphones to kill PNDs

Dong Ngo  |  Sep 02, 2009

If you need a GPS device to get around, it's becoming more likely you'll get yourself a mobile phone with built-in satellite mapping than buy a standalone personal navigation device (PND).

According to market research firm iSuppli, by 2011, virtually all smartphones will sport built-in GPS functionality, and by 2014 there might be no more market left for PNDs.

While this is a grand statement, it's quite credible. Just a year or two ago, it was hard to find a phone with built-in GPS functionality that actually worked reliably. Now look at my iPhone 3GS. I have all three major GPS applications on it, including TomTom, Navigon, and iGo My Way, and each can turn the phone into a dependable navigator. In addition, I am now testing the fourth one, CoPilot Live from ALK Technologies.

StarHub provides free mobile access to MSN Live and Facebook

Darius Chang  |  Aug 07, 2009

To push for greater mobile broadband penetration among youths, StarHub is offering free access to Windows Live Messenger for selected Windows Mobile and Nokia Symbian handsets from August 8. This allows you to log into these programs without incurring any data charges. The LG GM730, which will be launching tomorrow, has the added bonus of complimentary surfing for its embedded Facebook program.

There are some limitations to the scheme. Though basic Live Messenger features like chatting and voice clips are free, actions such as launching the Internet browser, checking Hotmail, search, Link to Space and creating New Live ID are chargeable. The other is that only mobiles preinstalled with the Live Messenger and Facebook applications are eligible for this plan. These handsets currently include Nokia E71, Nokia E63, Nokia E52, HTC Diamond, HTC Touch HD, HTC Diamond2, HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Omnia, Samsung Omnia II and LG GM730.

Hands-on with the Creative Zii Egg

John Chan  |  Jul 30, 2009

(Credit: John Chan/CNET Asia)

We were invited to the Creative office today to learn more about the recently announced Zii Egg. Though all its features point to it being a consumer-oriented media player like the Apple iPod touch, the difference is that Creative isn't selling it as such. While anyone can place a preorder at the Zii Web site, the Egg is clearly positioned as a product for developers to work on and create applications for Creative's new Plaszma platform. To that end, it will ship together with an SDK (software development kit).

Google Android will also be available for the Zii Egg, but according to a Creative spokesperson, this will not be preinstalled. The company is working on refining Android's performance on the device and will provide the OS as a download after the product ships. The Zii Egg preorders will be fulfilled from the second half of August. Click for more pictures and a video.

It's official: Creative Zii Egg runs on Android

We knew Creative was up to something when that Zii Egg FCC application flew past us earlier this month, but we had no idea it would be this awesome, or this confusing. Turns out the Zii Egg (what an unfortunate name) is a multitouch, HD video-capable, dual camera (front and back) rival to the iPhone and iPod touch, running on Google's Android OS (see all the official specs over at Zii.net).

You can grab a 32GB model now for US$399, but don't expect it to be fully baked. Creative is announcing this as a "developer edition" in the hopes that the Android community will pick up the platform and run with it. I guess it takes a village to beat an iPhone.

Palm introduces Mojo SDK Beta for webOS to developers

Bonnie Cha  |  Jul 17, 2009

On Thursday, Palm announced the public release of its Mojo SDK to all developers interested in creating apps for its WebOS and launched a new developer portal, complete with FAQs, forums, and all the associated documentation for the SDK. In addition, the company said it will open the app submission process to all developers this fall and new applications are already in the pipeline from its early access program. Sweet, sweet news for both developers and Palm Pre owners.
