We've just heard that the Palm Pre from American operator Sprint may be launched as early as May. This is based on internal emails sent to Sprint retail employees telling them that training for this new webOS-based product is about to begin and that they can't go on leave in May. To further fuel that rumor, The Boy Genius Report actually got pictures of the Pre in public.
The photos show two people using their Pre's camera to shoot an event. According to the photographer, these two said they have been using the Pre for a couple of weeks and that we "probably won't have to wait too much longer" for a public release.
So it looks like Palm is on track for a release of the CDMA Pre in the US. Those who need a GSM-based Pre are still out of luck for now as the company has yet to announce a version that will work with operators' networks here in Asia and in Europe. Click to see another close-up image.

Palm, Sprint to launch Pre early as May?

There are two things the tech world is waiting to hear about the Palm Pre: When it will arrive, and what it will cost. The first answer might be falling into place.
Phone News (via Gizmodo) obtained internal emails sent to Sprint retail employees informing them that training for the Pre is about to begin, and that taking a vacation during May is not going to be allowed. There are two scenarios for the Pre launch date outlined in the memos that seem to depend on Palm's ability to wrap up development and ramp up manufacturing.
The first scenario involves a May 17 launch date, which assumes Palm can get enough Pres in Sprint's hands by the end of this month or the beginning of May. If that doesn't happen, Sprint and Palm would then delay the launch date to June 29, according to Phone News, which would allow them to just slip in under the deadline Palm set earlier this year for shipping the Pre within the first half of 2009.
May 17 is a Sunday, which might seem like an odd day to launch a phone, but perhaps Sprint is looking to take advantage of weekend traffic in its retail stores. It has definitely seemed that Sprint is driving much of the Pre endgame strategy, which needs just one more detail: Price.

Report: Carriers "pass" on forthcoming Dell handset

Dell hasn't sold a handset since it axed the popular Axim in 2007.
Dell has decided to sell its new product through retailers only, Ashok Kumar of Collins Stewart said. While that's certainly interesting, and in line with Dell's recent record of testing new ways of approaching the market with its products, the reason Kumar gives is far more tantalizing: He says US and European carriers were none too impressed with Dell's effort when the company tried to sign up some wireless partners during a meeting at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.

Toshiba TG01 running Windows Mobile 6.5

WMPoweruser recently posted a video showing the Toshiba TG01 running Windows Mobile 6.5 (You can see the embedded video after the jump). While we don't know the full story behind this video, it's plain to see that it runs really smoothly. The initial experience we had with Windows Mobile 6.5 on a Touch Diamond2 didn't even come close to what this video is showing. It could be that the latest build of WM6.5 has improved significantly from when we last saw it, or that the 1GHz processor on the TG01 is doing its job. Truth be told, it's probably a combination of both factors.
The original blogpost from WMPoweruser states that there is no guarantee the update to WM6.5 will be provided for this Toshiba model. On the flipside, in our video interview with Microsoft regarding this latest version, the company's spokesperson did say that the TG01 is one of the models that will be getting an update. Let's see what really happens after the commercial launch of WM6.5.

Bluetooth 3.0 to be official end of April

It's official: Bluetooth 3.0 is coming. The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest
Group) will officially
announce Bluetooth 3.0 on April 21. It'll be significantly faster and will
enable the transfer of entire media libraries at the touch of a button. It also
promises a new feature called Enhanced Power Control that reduces the number of
disconnects.
The most interesting part of Bluetooth 3.0 is that it uses a combination of technologies that lets it operate at Wi-Fi speeds. For example, you can pair a phone with a laptop via Bluetooth, but then the data transfer between the two devices will be handed off to Wi-Fi, which makes transfer speeds a lot faster. Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for this to happen; otherwise it will just use the Bluetooth for data transfer.
More details on actual hardware will come on April 21 when the spec is made official.
