Is there a crack in your Xperia?

Update: Sony Ericsson has informed us that there have been no reports of the mentioned cracks in Asia so far. The company says that any complaints will be assessed on a "case-by-case basis", which means someone will need to actually have this problem before we will find out how Sony Ericsson will react to it. Click here to read the X1's warranty terms (warning: PDF link).

According to a discussion at XDA Developers, some users are seeing cracks on their Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. These hairline fractures seem to develop around the stylus slot in the silver version and are occurring to sets bought in Europe. From the forum thread, those with black sets aren't getting the same problem and some are speculating that the reason for that is because the black version uses a different material around the stylus slot area.

Unexplained cracks in gadgets are not uncommon. Some might remember early batches of the Nintendo DS Lite also encountered such an issue on its screen hinge. Nintendo US repaired or replaced sets, but those not in the US may still be living with a cracked DS Lite. We have contacted Sony Ericsson regarding its replacement policy and are awaiting a response. In the meantime, go have a look at your X1 and see if you have such a problem. Let us know in the Talkback below.

Rumor has Android G2 in the works

Steven Musil  |  Dec 22, 2008

HTC G1

On the heels of Google revealing enhancements to its Android mobile platform, rumors are circulating that we may soon be seeing a new Android device.

The T-Mobile G2, as the device will reportedly be called, will debut on January 26, according to "rumors" reported by Cell Phone Signal. The new device is expected to have a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, VGA camera for video calls, a full touch screen, and Wi-Fi connectivity, according to the blog.

Boy Genius Report has reported a follow-up rumor that says those specs are pretty accurate, but that the release date will actually be in April. Boy Genius' tipster said the G2 wouldn't have a physical QWERTY keyboard, but there would still be a trackball at the bottom of the device.

Google reveals upcoming Android features

David Meyer  |  Dec 22, 2008

T-Mobile's G1, aka the HTC Dream, was the first phone to go on sale with Google's Android operating system.

Imminent enhancements to Google's Android mobile platform have been revealed last week, in the form of a development effort called "Cupcake."

Android is in the process of being turned by Google from its own development project into open source. This week, some of the changes made to the mobile operating system by a private group of developers came to light in Cupcake--the Android code the group shares with the outside world. Now, according to the Android road map, the Cupcake enhancements have started to be merged into the wider, open-source Android project.

The private development branch will continue to operate, and the current merging of the new features into the master Android branch will be completed in early January.

Will 2009 be the year of the Android?

Damian Koh  |  Dec 22, 2008

Though Apple had been making headlines with the iPhone 3G, the smart phone to beat in 2009 is the Android-based HTC G1. Powering the G1 is an open source operating system which has loads of potential. However it's not alone, as Windows Mobile and Symbian are already dominant in the smart phone market and RIM gaining ground with its consumer-led BlackBerrys. The G1 is already shipping in the US, but we'll only be able to see what the open source platform and community can really do next year.

What do you think? Will you wait for an Android smart phone?
