iPhone or T-Mobile G1?

Kent German  |  Nov 05, 2008

HTC G1

I'm a month-to-month T-Mobile customer with a Nokia 6133 that is on its lest leg. I want to get a phone with a full Internet browser and I'm deciding between the iPhone and the T-Mobile G1. I'd also like access for my Yahoo mail, but I don't need my work email. Which do you recommend? Also, I don't own an iPod or use iTunes (I usually use Amazon to purchase music), so I'm concerned about moving to an all-iTunes environment.
- EJ

That's a a very good question, EJ, and the answer depends on your individual needs and desires. Though the iPhone is the better overall device (at least right now) a person in your situation should seriously consider the G1. Here is why.

I always tell people who are considering purchasing an iPhone 3G that there are three reasons to buy one. Forget the slick design and the flashy and user-friendly interface; I recommend buying the iPhone for its Web browser, its media player, and (to a somewhat lesser extent) its support for third-party applications. These three areas are where the iPhone performs very well, so I advise basing your decision on a comparison of those points. Sure, the design and interface are important, but I'd treat them and the email integration as secondary motivators. And of course, I wouldn't base my decision on call quality alone, as the iPhone 3G still suffers in that area.

Korea-only T*Omnia is Omnia on steroids

John Chan  |  Nov 03, 2008

It looks no different from the current Omnia, but the T*Omnia packs in quite a few more features.

The Samsung Omnia has been sold in Asia and Europe for a couple of months now, but hasn't seen the light of day in its home country, Korea. Well, in case you thought that the chaebol forgot about its fellow countrymen, think again--it was merely taking its time to prepare an enhanced version. Today, Samsung launched the T*Omnia in Korea, and if you are a current Omnia user, prepare to go green with jealousy.

Like the Omnia SGH-i900, the T*Omnia SCH-M495 is also an HSDPA device with 16GB internal storage and runs Windows Mobile 6.1. The big difference is this: It comes with a 3.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display--four times the resolution of the original's 400 x 240 screen. Aside from that, the T*Omnia is also equipped with satellite DMB for viewing digital TV in Korea. Even with those additions, the T*Omnia weighs 131g, just 9g heavier than the original, and is only marginally larger. This makes it a prime alternative to HTC's upcoming Touch HD which also has a WVGA display and a no-keypad form factor.

Given its UMTS and GSM capabilities, our immediate thought was that it should have no problems working outside of Korea. Unfortunately, Samsung told us that this is a Korea-only product and that there are no current plans to launch it elsewhere. Perhaps the screams of a million Omnia fans on message boards will change that--but for now, we can only look and drool.
