Most of us will have to wait until October 22--or later, given that T-Mobile sold out--but if you have the right connections, you can get an Android phone now.
Google co-founder Larry Page flashed his Android phone briefly in a meeting two weeks ago with reporters, but they're trickling farther down the ranks at the Internet giant, too.
I snapped this shot of one Google employee surfing CNN.com with his Android phone while waiting for his chief executive, Eric Schimdt, to talk about energy at a San Francisco speech last week.
Android is the Linux-based open-source operating system Google created in partnership with several other companies. T-Mobile is selling the first Android-powered phones, the G1, but other manufacturers are expected to join in 2009.

RIM together with Vodafone have finally made the BlackBerry Storm official. A press release was sent out detailing the BlackBerry 9500 and 9530 devices, which are essentially the same. Except that the 9530 is meant for Verizon in the US and has a CDMA/EV-DO radio, while the 9500 is for the rest of the world with UMTS/GSM connectivity.
The main difference of the Storm compared with earlier BlackBerry models is the lack of any keypad, instead relying on a 480 x 360 touchscreen for input. It's not quite the same as what we are used to on products like the iPhone or HTC Touch Diamond. This screen depresses slightly when you click on something, making it somewhat like one huge button so you get tactile feedback when selecting items.
Other features of the Storm include a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS for navigation and a microSD slot which supports up to 16GB cards. The only glaring absence is Wi-Fi, so users will have to depend on HSDPA or EV-DO for high-speed data transfers.
We contacted BlackBerry to find out when we will get the Storm in Asia, but RIM only said it will "keep everyone posted when Vodafone releases further information about plans in specific countries". Let's hope that will be sooner rather than later. Vodafone will be giving details on availability and price in the coming weeks for Europe and the US.

Confirmation that BlackBerry's touchscreen-enabled Storm will be launched soon came in the form of a teaser ad recently aired on CBS. This was put up on YouTube, and though it didn't give any interesting information, we now know Verizon Wireless will be officially announcing it soon. Watch the embedded video first posted on Engadget after the break.

If you've been sulking around the past few days after hearing that the T-Mobile G1 has already sold out through pre-sale orders, here's some news that might cheer you up.
T-Mobile announced Friday that it will continue to take pre-orders for the G1 through October 21, though the Google Android smart phone won't be delivered by the official October 22 launch date. Rather the carrier has a target delivery date of November 1. Here is the official statement from T-Mobile:
"Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our October 22 launch date, and have sold through them all. However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through October 21, for delivery at a later date. Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning October 22. Details are available on the T-Mobile G1 Web site, www.T-MobileG1.com."

With all the presentations, pictures and videos out there, you know BlackBerry's touchscreen phone has to be coming soon.
This is not going to end till the product gets officially launched, and the latest is that Boy Genius Report has gotten its hands on what looks like a full PowerPoint presentation of the BlackBerry Storm. The slides indicate that this device will come with features like a 480 x 360-pixel touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization, GPS and options to type using both QWERTY and SureType (as seen on BlackBerry Pearl handsets) input methods.
It's important to note that this is a presentation for the Verizon BlackBerry 9530, an EV-DO device which is meant to work in the US. We'll have to wait and see if the GSM/UMTS version for Asia will have similar features.
