Xbox Live's social media features used by millions

Daniel Terdiman  |  Nov 24, 2009
Microsoft on Monday said that millions of Xbox Live members have used the new social-media features that the company pushed live a week ago.

In June, Microsoft announced it would begin offering Xbox Live users access to Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm. And while the manifestation of each of those services is scaled down on Xbox Live, the rollout has been one of the company's big pushes this fall for its hugely popular online system.

According to Microsoft spokesman David Dennis, the first-week figures show that at least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook, and that half a million Last.fm accounts were created in the first 24 hours of availability. Dennis didn't address how many Xbox Live users have used the service's Twitter feature, except to say that there have been "tweets from nearly every market where we have Xbox Live."

Induction-based Wii remote charging kit

Philip Wong  |  Nov 24, 2009

Nintendo has possibly the least elegant implementation for its Wii remote as far as battery power is concerned. While users can recharge their PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers easily via USB, they generally have to rely on third-party chargers for the Wii, which may be incompatible with silicon sleeves and the latest Wii MotionPlus attachments. Nonetheless, Energizer is addressing these issues with its Wii Energizer 4x charging station. This mousepad-like gadget utilizes induction technology that enables contact-free battery recharging for up to four remotes in any configuration.

Game portal Kotaku has given the US$49.99 Wii Energizer 4x charging station a go and has published a review here. There's no indication of Asia availability and pricing for this product, unfortunately.

3D-ready PS3 scheduled for 2011

Scott Stein  |  Nov 23, 2009

Will 3D gaming help the PS3, or is it a gimmick?
(Credit: Kotaku)

Sony has a strategy for upping the quality of its content and providing an incentive for gamers to upgrade their home entertainment systems next year, and it involves the PS3 going 3D.

A presentation to investors yesterday underlined that the PlayStation 3 will be a fully 3D-capable game console by the end of 2010, and that a firmware update would share this upgrade across all existing PS3s. A few demos of PS3 3D gaming have been shown previously, but the news of an across-the-board firmware update is new. Of course, a gamer would still need a 3D-capable Bravia HDTV and glasses, the latter of which haven't been announced yet.

We're curious how the quality will be--Nvidia's 3D game technology, now being embedded into laptops, looks great, but requires a 120Hz monitor for fluid motion. But it's a smart idea, if manufacturers want anyone to adopt 3D tech, to include it as a Trojan horse inside laptops and game consoles. And we hope it works on HDTVs other than specific Bravias. It doesn't sound like the PS3 will double as a 3D Blu-ray player, but we certainly hope that's the case.

Lego and Muji reinvent construction paper

John Chan  |  Nov 20, 2009

Lego has teamed up with Japanese retailer Muji to create an interesting take on the building block toy. The Lego for Muji Paper and Block Set together with a paper punch allow the colorful sheets to nestle nicely on the pieces. The builder can cut the paper into different shapes, giving lots of possibilities with just a few blocks. Some of the pictures show cute animal constructions and some Christmas-inspired designs. This product is available in Japan starting at 2,300 yen (US$26) a box. Check with a local Muji shop for availability in your country.

Rumor: PS3 to have Firefox?

David Carnoy  |  Nov 20, 2009

Rumor has it Sony's in talks with Mozilla about porting Firefox over to the PS3. (Credit: Gizmodo)

We've been hoping for a while that Sony would replace the PS3's mediocre built-in Web browser with something more robust, so it's nice to hear that Sony might be in talks with Mozilla to port Firefox over to the PS3--even if it's just a rumor.

The folks at PlayStation Insider say they've "received a tip from a source very close to Sony" about possible conversations between Mozilla and Sony. No word on whether a deal is close, but having Firefox on board would put a little more wood behind the PS3's arrow in its battle against the XBox 360 and the Wii.

Do you agree?
