Nintendo has taken the wraps off a new version of the DSi handheld that sports larger 4.25-inch dual screens. The portable gaming unit will be considerably bigger than current and previous DS and DSi models. It will be dubbed the DSi LL in Japan where it goes on sale on November 21 for 20,000 yen (about US$220).
In Europe, the unit will be known as the DSi XL when it appears on store shelves in the first quarter of 2010. Nintendo did not provide details on a possible launch in Asia outside Japan.
GameSpot on Monday published a report from the Japan-based Nikkei news service saying that a new Nintendo DSi with two larger screens is slated to hit the market as early as this year.
Supposedly, the bump would increase the dual screens' size from 3.25 inches to 4.3 inches. While that sounds like a huge upgrade, there are a few reasons we're just not ready to believe this yet.
First of all, this new redesign would force the production of a brand new casing, something we're not sure Nintendo is ready to spend money on with the DSi still fresh in the market. Second, Siliconera got word from Nintendo PR saying the story is pure speculation.

Real life imitating reel? This bizarre trading of places is increasingly taking a grip of the videogame universe. Dr. Martens' orthopedic sole shoes, once soul shoes for the youth subcultures like your friendly punks and grungers, are now not only lending their footwear the upcoming Guitar Hero: Band Hero (November release), actual limited editions of the virtual 14-hole rock punk boots will be sold. In the game, players can customize their cyber outfits with Converse, Vans or Dr. Martens.
Four models of the 1914 Rocker Docs, with a glazed guitar motif in black, pink, bordeaux and white, are retailing globally. In Singapore, just 16 pairs will be offered, at S$259 each, and only at the Orchard Central store. And it's all to let you dress the part of your game's character. Bizarre? Well, cosplay or anime role play has been around for the longest time, so this will likely have its Guitar Hero fans.
While Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS received critical acclaim across the board, the game didn't necessarily sell as well as it should have. Rockstar Games chose to bring the title over to the PSP, and with it, a complete graphical revamp.
We've had the final version of the game for some time now and here are our thoughts:
While Toshiba has reluctantly embraced the Blu-ray format, its former HD-DVD ally Microsoft is still refusing to budge. Earlier, its CEO Steve Ballmer had hinted at a Blu-ray addon for the company's Xbox 360 to gadget blog Gizmodo. But this turned out to be a "miscommunication" according to a Microsoft spokesperson, as Ballmer was referring to the PC market instead. This official response is in line with the Redmond software giant's vision of an online content distribution model, including Xbox 360's upcoming full-HD movie-streaming service in the US.
We would like to buy that idea, too, except that broadband penetration in this part of the world is still somewhat lacking. I just have this feeling that Microsoft would have been much more receptive to Blu-ray if it wasn't championed by Sony with its competing PlayStation 3 consoles. Too bad.
