A Victorinox that helps Dad stay on time

Juniper Foo  |  Jun 17, 2009

The Victorinox Swiss Army Travel Alarm 1884 shows its Swiss pedigree in every way. There's the clean stainless steel lines and craftmanship, accentuated by red side panels and face. There's the clockwork precision you can expect from the Swiss analog quartz movement. And there's, of course, the Swiss Army ingenuity that we all love. In this case, you get the same folding system as the Swiss Army Knife complete with two favorites, the toothpick and tweezer in a side panel.

Chairman Mao's laptop cooling pad

Kelvin Low  |  Jun 17, 2009

A design revolution. (Credit: Chinavasion)

If you notice that you dad hoards a large collection of propaganda from China's Cultural Revolution or the Great Leap Forward, here's a perfect modern-day father's gift idea for him.

He probably won't get too excited with the basics--it’s an all-aluminum laptop cooling pad with two fans that draw power from the laptop's USB port.

What he will appreciate is the calligraphy that's printed on the surface. Titled "Qinyuanchun--Snow", the poem was written by Chairman Mao Ze Dong in 1936. It's nice that they reproduced the entire poem in Mao's own handwriting for that extra authenticity oomph.

Chinavasion sells this fancy laptop cooling pad for US$14.55, delivery not included. Might seem steep for what essentially is a simple cooling pad, but for dad's bragging rights, this thing has it in loads.

Zeo "sleep coach" tracks your ZZZs and wakes you up

Mats Lewan   |  Jun 15, 2009

The Zeo bedside display shows you personal sleep information such as how long you really sleep each night, and how long it takes you to doze off. The headband sends personal sleep data wirelessly to the bedside display. (Credit: Zeo)

It seems like the market for alarm clocks and smart wake-you-up gadgets is getting more competitive than cell phones, MP3 players, and autos. But here's a new entry worth noting for those who already tried starting the day with the obnoxious Clocky, the Shocking Alarm Clock, the Philips Wake-Up Light, or even the Wake n' Bacon.

It's called Zeo, and it's a "personal sleep coach" that can give you data on the quantity, quality, and depth of your slumber. The product is being released now by Newton, Mass.-based Zeo, formerly known as Axon Labs, a Rhode Island startup.

Quiksilver's Deep X watch for hardcore surfers

Justin Yu  |  Jun 12, 2009

Radio signals beam tide information directly to the DeepX watch (Credit: Acquire)

The DeepX watch from Quiksilver might be your best asset in the water this summer. The sporty timepiece also includes an advanced database of 2,000 popular surf spots around the world with tide information calculated by a professional oceanographer to determine the precise latitude and longitude of the coastline.

Developed and tested by some of the hardest surf riders around, the DeepX tide can also beam information on your local coast through radio frequencies built right into the watch. Quiksilver also claims its calculations are more accurate than most tide charts because it calculates information specifically for every spot, instead of just using the data of the closest harbor.

Heinz's USB-powered microwave

John Chan  |  Jun 09, 2009

Whoever said the MacBook Air was useless probably hates beans.
(Credit: Daily Mail)

This product is evidence that the potential of the USB port knows no bounds. Heinz, famous for its baked beans, has come up with a microwave oven called the Beanzawave powered by a computer's USB port. This is large enough to heat up a small cup of beans such as the Hoops Snap Pots product from the company.

The Beanzawave has the safety features found in a regular microwave oven. It takes under a minute to heat up a small amount of food, perfect for single-serve snacks. Though currently powered by USB, there's a possibility the same effect can be achieved using lithium-ion batteries, which would make it perfect for campers or fishermen.

The Beanzawave costs too much to make, about 100 pounds (US$161), and so is currently just a prototype. The company says it will assess public feedback before considering this mini-microwave for mass production.
