Pleo narrowly escapes extinction

Damian Koh  |  Jun 23, 2009

Dear Pleo, we were devastated when news of your extinction made headlines a while ago. Now, we're heartened to hear that you'll be back. Jetta Company, the firm that manufactured you for the now defunct Ugobe, has apparently acquired the assets of Ugobe which was facing bankruptcy. The good news is your comeback will be accompanied by an accessories lineup including batteries and charging components. Now, all that's needed to complete the happy picture are baby dinobot Pleos.

New Energizer battery packs beefs up with iPhone, solar options

David Carnoy  |  Jun 23, 2009

Through a partnership with XPAL Power, Energizer has expanded its Energi to Go line of portable battery packs in a big way. The newly branded chargers run the gamut from an iPhone 3G/3G S battery sleeve to a couple of solar chargers to a larger lithium ion charger that can juice up to three devices at once, including a laptop.

Most of the chargers include cell tips for various makes and models of cell phones, and you can get free new tips online as future phones come out.

Many of the battery packs are available already under the XPAL brand, but the new packaging should be appearing very soon in stores.

Rubber band revolver: Ready, aim, shoot!

I went shopping for my little brother's birthday last weekend, and I never thought I'd say it, but toys are way too complicated. In addition to having the most complicated packaging ever, all the action figures and playsets look like they were teleported out of some dystopian future. I really do miss the days when the imagination and roleplaying were the only accessories necessary to have a fun time. Which is precisely the reason why I've selected designer/craftsman Andy Mangold's Rubber Bandit modern take on the classic rubber band gun to show off today.

All hail the world's tiniest drill

John Chan  |  Jun 19, 2009

While there's really very little practical purpose for it, this homemade drill is nothing short of awesome. Flickr user s8 built the "drill pendant" with a tiny motor and battery. It's so small the length of the handle is about the width of the maker's index finger.

In a video, s8 shows the drill bit turning and the sound it makes when doing so. Though we suspect a needle or a Swiss Army Knife's awl could probably do anything this DIY drill can, you have to admit that they are nowhere as cool.

Battery-free LED flashlight that could outlast you (almost)

David Carnoy  |  Jun 18, 2009

Light for Life uses ultracapacitor technology. You can see it in its dock (left) (Credit: 5.11 Tactical)

Last year, 5.11 Tactical, a US company which makes clothes and gear aimed at law enforcement officers (but sells to civilians), announced a new high-tech flashlight called Light for Life. Only recently, however, has it become available to order.

What's special about it? Well, the flashlight uses three LEDs, but its key component is Flashpoint Power technology, an ultracapacitor energy storage system from Ivus Energy Innovations.

Light for Life recharges in just 90 seconds and shines at 90 lumens for 90 minutes per charge. The flashlight has three modes: Bright (270 peak lumens), standard (90 lumens), and strobe, which is good for dance parties or scaring the neighbors' dog and kids (OK, I'm kidding, but you get the picture).
