mypressi's handheld coffee Twist

Juniper Foo  |  Apr 29, 2009

No George Clooney smoldering the screen, but this aims to hit the spot with espresso to go anytime, anywhere. (Credit: mypressi)

Thanks to the delectable George Clooney and peer pressure, I finally caved and bought a Nespresso machine with a steam wand. Unfortunately, the hassle of dealing with the milk residue in the wand and washing up after each use soon overcame the convenience of instant capsule-to-cup coffee. Since then, the Nespresso's been sitting neglected and forlorn in a corner. Now the mypressi Twist has been announced, it's ever so tempting to indulge my inner caffeinated geek.

Looking like a take on the gourd rattler, the Twist not only seems a darn sight easier to clean up, it sounds dead easy to operate, too. To use, simply drop in a (recyclable) CO2 cartridge (yields up to eight single shots) into the pressure chamber, fill the basket with freshly ground coffee or a coffee pod (needs adapter), fill the upper compartment with hot water, and pull the trigger.

Artist's tricked-out "cybugs" creating a buzz

Leslie Katz  |  Apr 29, 2009

For insect-phobes, the only thing scarier than a big, hairy tarantula would be a big, hairy tarantula tricked out with brass gears and looking like it had crawled straight out of a sci-fi horror fest. But rest assured, this spider won't bite--or crawl over your face in the middle of the night. Nor will any of Mike Libby's other cybugs.

Libby, a Portland, Maine, artist, customizes real insect specimens with antique watch parts and other technological components, and the results are generally more cool than creepy. He has shown his work around the country, most recently at the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, D.C.

First GPS-enabled asthma inhaler prototype

Dong Ngo  |  Apr 29, 2009

GPS-enabled inhaler (Credit: Asthma Blog)

The concept of a GPS-enabled asthma inhaler emerged less than a month ago, and already it is very nearly a reality.

SiliconSky GPS announced Tuesday that is has successfully developed a prototype of the first-of-its-kind asthma inhaler with built-in GPS tracking.

This is the result of a collaboration between SiliconSky GPS and David Van Sickle, the University of Wisconsin researcher who first unveiled the concept. It took them six months to come up with the design.

Design was a huge challenge, as the the inhaler had to remain small enough to carry on the go and wouldn't sacrifice the ease of use, since asthma sufferers need to be able to quickly get a dose of medicine when needed.

The prototype GPS inhaler is packed with technologies. It features Assisted GPS, a GSM modem, integral antennas, an embedded microprocessor, and an internal rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery allows for up to 10 days of operation between charges.

Shower curtains for the eco-minded masochist

Juniper Foo  |  Apr 28, 2009

Enough to make you swear off showers? (Credit: Elisabeth Buecher)

Cue Psycho music when it comes to using Elisabeth Beucher's Green Warrior Shower Curtains. This is one sadistic dame whose style philosophy of "design for pain and for our own good" aims to awaken people to the consciousness of their behavior and give them limits. Such as this shower curtain which slowly inflates (strangles?) around you while you shower, with the aim to trap tardy bathers. Claustrophobics need not apply.

In another take is a shower curtain embedded with spikes (picture after the jump) that will slowly inflate (via what claims to be an energy-efficient air pump) the longer you bath. Overstay your welcome and you'll be spitted, though seriously these look more like ticklish tentacles than painful skewers. Of course, there's always the concern that some people may get to like this too much. Still, either green-conscious shower curtain would assuredly ensure that family members take shorter baths in the morning, so you can get to work on time.

Mario, Link, and Mega Man immortalized in Lego mosaics

I've done the research, and it looks like Legos are well on their way to surpassing bacon as the Web's most popular trend, at least in the last year.

Sure, there's been a whole truckload of bacon iPhone cases, bacon floss, and even bacon bracelets, but Legos are hot on bacon's heels with the recent release of Lego video games, Lego boomboxes, and this collection of Lego mosaics dedicated to video games past.

Each intricate design is put together by hand by Flickr user notenoughbricks, an avid Lego fanfreak whose other builds include replica Renegade Racers, model space ships, and even a whole city street of his own invention.
