Over The Door Cat Climber for Garfield

Juniper Foo  |  Mar 23, 2009

I don't know about other cat owners, but I can just see my sister's obese tabby experiencing heartburn trying to get to the top of this, all thanks to Hammacher Schlemmer's Over The Door Cat Climber. To make it more interesting, you could exercise those rusty DIY skills to carve out a little (well, not so little) gate at the top of your door, so puss will have someplace to go. Though at US$169.95 excluding shipping charges, the steep price is liable to give you a heartburn, too. But if you love your kitty and want many more years of joy with it, this door-hung apparatus should be just what the vet ordered.

No more garlicky fingers with Garlic Zoom

Damian Koh  |  Mar 23, 2009
Dicing garlic is, obviously, not my forte. Otherwise I would have been a chef extraordinaire instead of dishing out literature on Crave Asia.

Not too long ago, I played a tiny role in preparing homemade steamed mussels with garlic and tomato broth. The shellfish dish was cheap, easy to prepare and delicious, but there was a tiny problem. The garlic left a pungent smell on the fingers. Sure, the condiment's great for flavoring, but the lingering odor negates any after-dinner plans.

Which is why I think the Garlic Zoom is a brilliant kitchen accessory. Pop in a peeled clove in the transparent cylinder and the stainless steel blade within will cut the bulb into tiny bits when you roll it back and forth. After you're done, simply open the lid and tap the garlic bits out.

The Garlic Zoom is available on Firebox for US$11.50, which is a small price to pay for some kitchen fun. Otherwise, you could opt for the cheapo option of rubbing your hands on a stainless steel utensil to get rid of the smell.

Light switches brace themselves for Swarovski

Justin Yu  |  Mar 23, 2009

It seems like everything under the sun is getting the Swarovski crystal treatment. Back in February, we introduced you to the top five Swarovski disasters, which included phones, radios, and even a whole piano covered in the stuff. Now you can add light switches to the list of useless abominations sprinkled with Swarovskis.

This time around, Berker Switches and Systems has teamed with Swarovski to present the "Crystal Collection". Why would you settle for a boring old plastic switch when you can get a large, multifaceted Swarovski-cut crystal instead?

Unix admins: Meet the Beard Head

Matt Hickey  |  Mar 22, 2009

I arrrrrrrrrr cold! (Credit: Mike Karikas)

Some of you have beards. I know, I've seen them. Now, I know this isn't a gadget per se, but it's not fashion, either. It's got a function. You need to protect and care for your beards, lest you lose your Linux admin superpowers.

Meet Beard Head, the hat that gives you a warm layer of artsy hair to cover your face in the cold.

Anyone looks good in one, or at least hairier. (Credit: Matt Hickey)

My editor mentioned these to me and I jumped at the chance to write about them as my friend Michael Karikas just got a Beard Head and wore it out a couple nights ago. Being me, I had my camera and took photographs.

Michael actually wears it snowboarding, so his is for Serious Business, but anyone in a cold area could benefit from the warmth a beard and 'stache can provide. They come in four styles: Lumberjack (brown), Viking (yellow), Pirate (black), and Grandpa (gray), and cost only US$24.99.

That may seem high to some of you, but having handled one of these things I can attest to how well-made they are. Not only that, but they're customizable. For US$4.99 more, you can make the 'stache a fu manchu-style, with more styles coming soon. I'm looking forward to the Mario version.

Cadillac rolls out in-car Internet access

Brian Cooley  |  Mar 20, 2009

The new Cadillac WiFi by Autonet Mobile can be transported to different cars. (Credit: Autonet)

Cadillac has announced the availability of an in-car wireless Internet option on its CTS sport sedan beginning in April. The new option will be called Cadillac WiFi (sic) by Autonet and be dealer-installed. The device itself will have an MSRP of US$499, and the service will cost US$29 per month.

This makes Cadillac one of the very first carmakers to offer wireless Internet in a production vehicle. Autonet Mobile says early market experience indicates that this option will appeal to families first, as opposed to the mobile business professional you probably think would be its main initial market.
