SunDry swimsuit means you never have to be wet

This one seems right out of the Baywatch film set.

Developed by Solestrom Swimwear International, the SunDry swimsuit draws on nanotechnology to weave an invisible mesh that wraps around each fiber strand in the fabric. This gives the swimwear water-repellent properties, letting liquid pass the surface of the material instead of penetrating it. Once out of water, the wearer just needs to do a few hops to shake off the H2O, and lounge on the sundeck without feeling uneasy wearing a damp swimsuit.

Three styles of SunDry swimsuits--one-piece tank suit, bikini and surf shorts--are available on Solestrom's Web site. The latter two cost US$80 each, while the TankSuit will set you back an additional US$10. For every purchase, the company will donate US$5 to an Animal Rescue organization of your pick.

Samsung's Papyrus e-book reader nears launch

David Carnoy   |  Mar 26, 2009

Samsung's upcoming e-book reader, the Papyrus, had its debut at CES in January, but the stylish looking device is now making the rounds in Europe with some new details in tow. What's interesting about it is that it seems to have quite a bit of PDA in it as Samsung's gone with a touchscreen (an aluminum stylus is included), and is bundling some utility applications such as a calculator, scheduler, and contacts. The Papyrus is an A5-size e-ink device (it's 5.8 inches by 8.3 inches (147.3 x 210.8mm) while the entire Kindle 2 measures 5.3 inches by 8 inches (134.6 x 203.2mm) with a 6-inch screen).

Taser Axon's headcam for cops

Juniper Foo  |  Mar 25, 2009

With the Taser Axon, law enforcers will now have an eye on you, literally and figuratively. (Credit: Taser Axon)

The next time Big Brother is watching you, it won't be just street cameras. Uniformed law enforcers could get a portable third eye soon, if the Taser Axon eventually becomes standard equipment in the police force. Like the military-inspired Sanwa Throat Microphone which clips around your throat, this one wraps around the head with the GPS-enabled camera eye peeking over the ear for full audio-video recording even in low light. Fortunately, there's a Privacy Mode to temporarily suspend recording since who needs to watch our friendly officers take nature breaks?

Japanese space underwear set to invade Earth?

Matt Hickey  |  Mar 25, 2009

Koichi Wakata looks comfortable enough to me. (Credit: NASA)

For some reason, everytime high-tech underwear news hits the Internet, my editors think it's something I need to cover (pun intended). This time, though, it's underwear from space. And it's Japanese underwear from space that lasts up to a week before you have to change it--for better or worse.

According to Reuters, the clothing called J-ware is currently being tested aboard the International Space Station, perhaps to the dismay of Koichi Wakata's fellow astronauts.

The skivvies, developed by textile specialists at Japan Women's University in Tokyo, are meant to absorb moisture, kill bacteria, and generally be comfortable in situations where there are no laundry facilities and you really can't be as freshly dressed as you'd like.

Thankfully, so far the tests have been successful. Wakata has been quoted as saying, "nobody has complained, so I think it's so far, so good". The question is, if the tests are fully successful, will the general, non-space-going world buy into the idea? There are plans for Earth-bound mass marketing of the week-long underwear. I for one am not into the idea, even if it works fine.

Google sets Street View for Laguna Seca racetrack

Wayne Cunningham  |  Mar 25, 2009

Google Maps will let you get on the track at Laguna Seca.

On March 26, Google lets you get in the path of American Le Mans racers on the track at Mazda raceway Laguna Seca. Specifically, Google was able to roll one of its Street View trucks, which use a spherical camera to take 360-degree photos, around the track in front of the cars preparing for the final race of the 2008 American Le Mans season. You will be able to go to Laguna Seca on Google Maps, and place the Street View icon to see track features such as the famous Corkscrew, and get a sense of why it's so tricky.

Editors' note: Google has just informed us that the launch of this new feature will be delayed, and is not occurring on March 26. Google would not specify a date when the new feature will be launched.
