A lantern that's really four flashlights

John Chan  |  Mar 06, 2009

If there are a bunch of you in a tent while out camping and one person needs to go pee, who gets to use the only lantern? On the one hand, the person with the full bladder needs to light the way to the makeshift toilet in the bushes, while the rest will be afraid that without a light, the tent inhabitants could fall prey to the murderous ways of Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger. Coleman, maker of camping equipment, has the solution with its LED Quad Lantern.

In the default state, it works like any other battery-powered lantern. But if nature calls, you can snap off one of the four sides for use as a flashlight. Each section has a built-in rechargeable battery good for 1.5 hours of light. When docked, this NiMH battery is charged by the eight D-cell batteries found in the lantern base. Very clever.

The LED Quad Lantern can be bought from online stores at US$69.99. Just type the product name in Google to find a list of stores that carry it. We're sure you'll find one that will ship this lantern to your country.

Trendnet adds Wireless-N to security camera

Dong Ngo  |  Mar 06, 2009

Trendnet TV-IP512WN Wireless-N Camera

If you're looking for a wireless security camera that supports the high-speed Wireless-N standard, Trendnet has something for you.

On Tuesday, the company announced its Wireless-N Internet Camera Server with 2-Way Audio, model TV-IP512WN. Essentially, this is a Wireless-N security camera that you can assess and control over the Internet without any additional equipment--thus the "server" moniker.

According to Trendnet, the TV-IP512WN supports throughput speeds up to 300Mbps and provides up to four times the coverage of comparable Wireless-G products. Its two-way radio feature means you can communicate with the person standing in front of the camera from the remote location.

Paper bags that don't quite behave like paper

Damian Koh  |  Mar 06, 2009

From the same man who designed the Papier A1 and Papier A2 comes a new collection of Papier (French for paper) bags. Unlike regular paper, these carriers are made from Tyvek, the same material used for industrial packaging and near indestructible envelopes. They are lightweight, tear-resistant and don't fall apart in the rain. Plus, they look even better aged.

Designed by Stefan Diez for his wife, the idea of a simple yet elegant Papier bag probably stems from the same motivation the male character in a short film by Bruce Branit had when he created a holographic world for woman he loves. You can't really put a price or time on these acts of love, can you?

Hanko watch a design nerd's joy

Matt Hickey  |  Mar 05, 2009

Sure, you could buy a regular watch that displays the time in a regular way, but where's the fun in that? You're a nerd (you're reading Crave) and you want to be different. So you probably already know about Tokyoflash watches.

The latest is the US$99.62 Hanko, and it's a design nerd's joy. The stainless steel watch is named after a form of Japanese stamp art it resembles and it's very simple object-wise, with nothing on the face save the black acrylic lenses. Behind these lenses is an array of LEDs that indicate the time when the action button is pressed.

The lights chase around the face, finally ending in a three-light position that tells you the current time. The inside lens is the hour, the outside the five-minute increments watches normally have, and the middle field is the number of minutes past that. Thus the illustration above shows 5:42.

Sure there's a learning curve, but if you learned how to tell time on a traditional clock face you should be able to learn on the Hanko, too. It's attractive enough on its own, but the added fun of bewildering people with your time-telling abilities makes this a fun watch as well as a stylish one.

Leave it to Japan: Robotic disaster rescue vehicle

Matt Hickey  |  Mar 05, 2009

Is this Dick Cheney's "undisclosed location"?
(Credit: Newlaunches.com)

I live in an earthquake-prone city. I live in this city in a very old building made out of unreinforced brick. This building is on the back of a steep hill over a freeway and then a lake. Thus, I'm likely to be crushed under tons of rubble and debris if a major earthquake hits Seattle.

If that does happen, it might take rescuers hours--or even days--to get to me. And when they do, they'll have to get me to safety somehow.
