Rubik's frustration is now spherical

John Chan  |  Feb 06, 2009

The Rubik's cube has been one of the most well-known puzzles since the 1980s. The inventor, Hungarian Erno Rubik, is not done with causing frustration and has just introduced the Rubik's 360 toy.

Unlike the original, this puzzle is spherical and the purpose is to change the position of six balls in its central sphere so that they will eventually be located in six compartments on the outer sphere.

It looks like this puzzle won't require you to remember an endless number of algorithms just to solve it like the original cube, but we won't be surprised if you still end up tearing your hair out in the process. It is expected to ship in July or August at 15.99 pounds (US$23.40).

Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 06, 2009

A colleague was just talking about Japanese haikus or short poems and meters during a company lohei (Singapore-style Lunar New Year lunch), when back at the PC box, ThinkGeek's rather cheesy attempt caught my eye, complete with Samurai legend.

The rain falls softly.
The samurai draws his sword.
Look, an umbrella.

Whether this Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella (US$29.99) is the brolly "you never knew you always wanted", it's admittedly wacky fun, particularly when it looks like the real deal slung across your back, warrior-style. Talk about a rain protector. Ranks up there with other bad ass umbrellas that bring new meaning to the phrase "safe and dry", from the knuckle-buster parasole to the Star Wars Rain Lightsaber.

She loves me, she loves me not timepiece

I remember a game I used to play as a besotted teenager. I would pluck petals of an Ox-eye daisy flower while reciting "she loves me, she loves me not". Thanks to Mr Jones Watches, the game, known as effeuiller la marguerite in France where it originated, has taken on a tech spin in the form of a limited-edition timepiece made in the UK. Instead of massacring flowers in the name of love, you just have to pull out the winding crown which will stop the animation on the watch face. There are only 100 pieces (US$145) available online. Each comes with its edition number engraved on the back of the case, and shipped in a presentation box designed by British artist Kate Street. Act fast if you aim to snag one of these in time for Valentine's.

What the fashionable nerd is wearing

Jeff Sparkman  |  Feb 06, 2009

I admit, I'd totally get these if I had the remotest chance of needing them. I mean, they're silver-plated Transformers cufflinks. What's not to like? You get one Autobots logo cufflink and one that represents the Decepticons.

OK, while they don't transform into robots, a pimptacular car, or a boombox (yes, I'm still bitter I never got Soundwave), maybe they will convince someone that there's more to you than meets the eye.

Alas, they're sold out at finkstudio's Etsy store right now, but who knows? They could be back soon. Hope springs eternal.

The G-1 Pool Table for the discerning

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 05, 2009

(Credit: Nottage Design)

At CNET Asia, we've seen more than our fair share of pool tables since our last workplace had a pub downstairs with one. In fact, it became such a favorite afterhour haunt for some of our co-workers during Happy Hour that we got our own pool table. Now that we've seen the G-1 Pool Table, that's only one word for it. Shazam! Contrary to the idea that a glass pool table is a bad, bad idea, this looks striking enough to eat off while offering a Vitrik playing surface that claims to emulate the feel of felt. Now that we've got to check out. On top of that, the entire table is constructed with toughened safety glass, so there's no fear this will crack if Mariah Carey hits one of her infamous high notes on the home stereo. It better not, since you'll be sinking a cool US$29,750 into the pocket just for the fancy glassworks. Ouch! Video after the jump.
