Top five items ruined by Swarovski crystals

Nate Lanxon  |  Feb 14, 2009

"Oh no, not you too, Sennheiser," we said when faced with an image of Sennheiser's "luxurious" CrystalRoc HD 25 headphones. These were such a delightful model before CrystalRoc got its mitts on them in 2007, with a US$442 price tag. (Photo credit: Sennheiser)

Only one thing looks worse than Winnie the Pooh having his face sandpapered off, and that's any gadget covered in Swarovski crystals, never mind if you have one of these in mind for Valentine's Day.

For some reason unbeknownst to us, Swarovski crystals seem to share certain properties with acne--they appear to crop up on everything at some point in its life, and no one suffering from them ever appears to be happy.

See the rest of the gallery after the jump for the five crystal-clad abominations that have stood out most over the last few years, starting with one that's only just hit our screens: Elton John's "Starburst" iPod nano. And if you think we missed a particularly offensive Swarovski-encrusted gadget, be sure to let us know in the comments section below!

Rubik's fun remixes

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 13, 2009
It's a measure of a product's enduring popularity when it spawns remakes that could seriously feed a collector's addiction. Having chucked my Coca Cola collectibles ages back when the obsession habit threatened to get out of hand, there's always a fascination for iconic gadgets like the Rubik's Cube. In fact, that's been popping up with such frequency in the past few months that I'm going to devote Crave ink to some fun remixes following this, literally and figuratively, puzzling success.

Rubik's Cube Salt and Pepper Mills. Did I mention I used to collect salt & pepper novelty shakers? That's past tense now, thank goodness. (Credit: Giftmonger )

A new way to glean the Rubik's Cube

Eric Franklin  |  Feb 13, 2009

Looking for an 1980s pop culture phenomenon with a modern twist? Of course you are, otherwise Transformers could not have made more than US$300 million in the US alone. Think smaller though, as in cube-shaped and able to fit in your hand. Of course, it's a Rubik's Cube, silly!

Gizmodo is reporting on a Rubik's Cube, the TouchCube, that features a touchscreen, and has an accelerometer and a button that makes it solve itself. It also can purportedly even teach you how to solve it step by step. The new cube is scheduled for a fall release.

What I remember most about the original Rubik's Cube was that when I switched the colored stickers around (so that it looked like I'd solved it), they never quite looked as flat as they did on a brand new cube. Yes, I'm admitting I was never very good at this thing and had to resort to "special tactics" to impress my friends, some of whom were dumb enough to actually believe that I'd solved it.

MYPL8: Find vehicular romance this Valentine's Day

Rory Reid  |  Feb 12, 2009

Seeking love and affection this Valentine's Day, but don't have the guts to tell your sweetheart? Using anonymous greeting cards because you're too socially inept to communicate face to face? If so, it's probably time to try a new tactic: Stalking innocent commuters while they're stuck in traffic.

The newly launched MYPL8 service--also known as PL8M8--allows love-starved U.K. drivers to communicate via text. Once you spot someone you fancy, note their car's registration number and, when it's convenient, text their registration number and a brief message to the MYPL8 text number. Provided the intended recipient has previously registered with the service, they'll get your message and the opportunity to reply as they see fit.

Check the train schedule while you eat sushi...in Japan

Eric Franklin  |  Feb 12, 2009

Tech-On reports that Fujitsu is currently conducting a test of the Kindle-like FLEPia mobile information terminal in Tokyo at the Termina Kinshicho Fujiya Restaurant.

The test is being conducted as a joint venture between SoftBank Telecom and Mainichi Newspapers.

Customers of the restaurant will be able to use the FLEPia's (maybe FLEPia is the plural?) to browse newspapers and advertisements wirelessly sent to the terminals.

Accoring to Tech-ON, the companies will verify whether the electronic paper module can be accepted as a terminal for reading newspapers, train schedules and weather reports, and whether the service can promote sales and boost customer satisfaction.

This system uses the "BB Mobile Point" wireless LAN service to deliver the content and to regularly update the content being displayed on the FLEPia.

The FLEPia uses electricity only when the displayed information is switched. As they don't need to be charged during business hours, there is no need to provide electricity to the table. LCD panel-based terminals, which have been used on tables (in Japan), require an electrical supply at the table.

Hopefully someone had the foresight to serve the menu through the service as well. That seems like a given to me, but what do I know about quirky Japanese gizmos?
