Keep your veggies fresh for days

Darius Chang  |  Feb 27, 2009

You know what's the problem with fresh fruits and vegetables? They may be good for our health but tend to be painful on the wallet. Buying in bulk is no solution as they spoil easily within a couple of days.

Case in point. One of our writers went on leave and left his banana lying on the desk for over a week. When he returned, the yellow fruit had turned into a gross brown soup trapped inside the skin. However, if he had placed it in a Debbie Meyer Green Bag, it might actually still be edible after a week.

According to the Web site, this bag works by absorbing the ethylene gas released by fruits and vegetables, which is the cause of rapid ripening. The company claims the material used, oya, is found in Japan caves which the locals use to keep their fresh produce.

Does it really work? T-Nation, a bodybuilding Web site, recently did a test using its own bananas. Though this would hardly pass for a rigorous scientific experiment, the end result vindicates the company's claims.

The official site for Debbie Meyer Green Bags ships only within the US, but it's also available on several online stores like Amazon which retails internationally.

Yuruppy, a virtual pet petting gizmo

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 27, 2009

Where do they dream up names like Yuruppy? Following in the footsteps of the faddish Tamagotchi from rival toy company Bandai, the Yuruppy is slated for a Japan rollout in June, at US$21. Takara Tomy has upped the ante here with a virtual pet that you can "pet" via the touchscreen. If you don't fancy a puppy, you can opt for a kitten or even the odd choice of a chicken. We're not sure how a Yuruppy chicken will respond to all this stroking, but we can always trust the Japanese to ensure that it'll be kawaii cute. There'll be a deluxe version (US$38) out in a larger screen so you can shower on more love and petting.

Medieval steel gauntlets: Rule your life with an iron fist

Matt Hickey  |  Feb 27, 2009

I cannot come up with a practical reason why I'd need these reproduction medieval gauntlets. I just want them. Think of all the people I could be! These are the last pieces I need to complete the following outfits: Destro, Sir Galahad, Drs. Klaw and Doom, and Optimus Prime (after a paint job).

No more carpal tunnel! (Credit: Think Geek)

I think, though, that I'd just keep them in my bag at all times. I imagine that next time I get into an argument with a drunk dude-bro at a bar I can get him to back down without violence simply by putting them on. They're made out of steel, for crying out loud. They also have leather finger loops that do something, though I'm not sure what.

The gauntlets, or Enforcers of Awesomeness as I'll call mine, are handmade and feature real riveting. If anyone out there is feeling generous, email me and I'll send you my mailing address. They're only US$59.99 from Think Geek. I need them for the +2 bonus they'll give me to my Charisma when I'm wearing them.

Bandai's Aqua Dance water game

More wacky games from the ideas factory of Japanese toy maker Bandai, this one claiming to utilize nanotech coating that imbues water droplets with mercury-like qualities. The Aqua Dance is probably not going to hold your attention for long beyond the initial novelty. But as with anything from the land of weird tech, this immediately carries a special "geek" tag.

We do know that this takes off from Aqua Drop, a similar gizmo where you feed water through the top and watch the beads slide, bounce, scatter or plop into holes along a handheld maze. Can anything be more riveting than watching the way H2O moves? If this holds water with you, watch for it in March, in Moon Night or Rainy Day colors. You never know when your friendly gadget shop may just ship this in from Japan.

A suitcase pillow for the weary traveler

Damian Koh  |  Feb 25, 2009

(Credit:Olive)

I'd take a wild guess here.

Most of us travel in economy class and are likely to have a handcarry bag in-flight. And we know the majority of carriers provide passengers with miserable and flat pillows.

Enter Olive's Take Me Anywhere Suitcase which is designed to look like a pillow and could possibly let you cruise along to a slightly more pleasant journey.

Available on online marketplace Etsy for US$40, the maker is willing to customize a color of your preference for the 15 x 11-inch travel case (smaller than an average cabin-sized suitcase) and even sew a personalized luggage tag on.

The suitcase, made from natural linen and felt, doesn't look like it'd fit many things after being stuffed with cluster-free fillings, but you know us. Nothing will get in the way of a restful slumber.
