From cigarette butt to fashion statement

That hat you see to the right is smokin'. No, it literally is. Chilean fashion designer Alexandra Guerrero made it from recycled cigarette butts.

Through her new company, Mantis, Guerrero combines purified smokes with natural wool to form a raw, textured material that can be woven into garments with a surprisingly appealing modern macrame flair.

Waterproof mouse soaks up serious sweat

I just can't get behind the concept of waterproof gadgets. An iPod Shuffle that you can submerge is kinda cool, but you still need waterproof headphones. Maybe you can use it in the shower with these speakers. But do you really need a waterproof mouse?

Your wallet says no, but USB Geek says yes. This five-button USB optical mouse is made with sealed silicone, making it completely waterproof. Despite how uncomfortable you feel about mixing water and lasers, USB Geek claims the optical sensor maintains precision on any surface. So in case you misplace your waterproof mouse pad, feel free to use that sea turtle's shell next time you're scuba diving and simply must check out what's new on CNET.

The mouse will also come in handy if you suffer from hyperhidrosis, no sweat.

Global IT spending expected to fall 3 percent in '09

Dawn Kawamoto  |  Jan 14, 2009

IT spending worldwide is expected to slip 3 percent this year, with computer makers taking the brunt of the decline, according to a Forrester Research report released Tuesday.

Global IT spending is predicted to drop to US$1.66 trillion this year, marking the first time in seven years the industry has not grown, according to the report, which used US dollars as its form of measurement.

"Our forecast for 2009 rests on the assumptions that the economic recession in the US and other major economies will start to end in the second half of 2009," Andrew Bartels, Forrester Research principal analyst, said in a statement. "For IT vendor strategists, the global IT market will be a gloomy one in 2009, with prospects of improvement in 2010. Unlike in past years, there are no significant growth markets to offset the weak ones."

Spending on computer equipment is expected to drop 4 percent this year to US$434 billion. The sector includes such items as personal computers, servers, storage devices, and peripherals.

The one work throne to rule them all

CES
Canadian-based NovelQuest's mother of all workspaces made another appearance at this year's CES tradeshow. Though our guys never got to park their behinds on this imperial contraption, it's worth mentioning again for its lust-inspiring awesomeness. The aptly named Emperor Workstation is built to mimic a life support system for the gamer geek, enclosing the user in a pod that's almost womb-like, with its own HEPA air filter, luxury Recaro leather seat, postural adjustments, lumbar support, and light therapy. There's even climate control to warm or cool the seat depending on the temperature outside. But what's awesomely awesome is the way the articulated arm rises like a scorpion's tail to let the user in, before lowering back into place.

Firm claims silver bullet for "vampire loads"

Martin LaMonica  |  Jan 13, 2009

A Spanish company says it has developed a way to kill the vampires lurking in your living room--the numerous appliances that suck electricity even when they are not in use.

Good for You, Good for the Planet received a patent for a microprocessor-based design that cuts an electronic machine's electricity use to zero. It is now negotiating with several large manufacturers to incorporate the technology into power strips or into appliances, according to President Jorge Juan García Alonso.
