Paniq at the Disco...in your jacket

Leslie Katz  |  Jan 24, 2009

The Paniq controller lets you play, pause, and adjust the volume on your iPod--via the "smart fabric" on your garment.

Sometimes--like when it's freezing out or you're speeding along on your bike--it's not very convenient to take out your gadget and fumble with the controller. A new wearable electronics system called Paniq lets you do the controlling straight from your clothes, which could make things easier (or not).

By connecting Paniq modules to Paniqmode interactive garments, you can control your iPod or other gizmo via smart-fabric buttons integrated into the garb.

Where will Microsoft cut?

Ina Fried  |  Jan 21, 2009
It's not just Steve Ballmer who is searching Microsoft to look for potential areas to cut.

Now, reporters are getting in on the act.

All of those free sodas add up. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Microsoft spends US$20 million a year to provide free beverages to workers.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has an interesting piece up adding up the cost of a number of employee perks. The paper reports that Microsoft isn't necessarily planning to cut the morale-boosters, but says it has seen a PowerPoint presentation that calculates their cost.

All those free sodas, juices, and cartons of milk, for example, cost Microsoft US$20 million a year. The shuttle that takes Microsoft workers from building to building around its campus costs US$14 million, while its relatively new Connector bus service, which transports workers to Microsoft from other places in the Seattle area, generates a US$13 million annual tab.

Li Jianye's design brings Cover Flow to life

Justin Yu  |  Jan 21, 2009

This iShelf design by Li Jianye takes the iTunes Cover Flow idea and brings it to real life. Think about it too hard and you might notice its small inadequacies (it can only hold five jewel cases and doesn't rotate), but it's the cleverly ironic idea that counts, right? Plus, you can put it on your shelf and brag to your Mac friends that you don't need the PC version of iTunes to make you happy. The iShelf is currently still in the prototype stages of design and might never see the light of day.

More pics after the jump.

Wozniak on Steve Jobs' health, Apple culture

Steven Musil  |  Jan 19, 2009

Offering a unique perspective on Steve Jobs' health, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is speaking out in the media on his old friend's leave of absence and its likely effect on the company.

In an interview with NBC11 in San Jose, Calif., Wozniak said investors and the media should be respectful of his privacy.

"What he says, we ought to accept," Wozniak said in response to a question about Jobs' health.

Wozniak also said Jobs' six-month absence shouldn't have a negative effect on Apple's product line:

"The products coming out of Apple, out of tech companies, have a long tech pipeline...they work their way through for a year, year and a half...Those products are in the pipeline, they're not going to be disturbed."
