Another Swarovski victim is in the bag

What would go impractically well with a US$350 Dunhill USB drive? A Swarovski-studded laptop bag, of course. Port Designs has made one to order in the name of Paris, a crystal-trimmed case in a sleek black design for laptops up to 15.4 inches. It even has a matching heart charm, Chip Chick says, in case you don't have enough rhinestones in your life. As saddened as we are to see another Swarovski-infected product on the market, we're somewhat heartened that its designers exercised some restraint, unlike other items we've seen. One must take what one can get.

Eco Button puts your computer to zzz...

This sounds like something you can already do by clicking the Start button on your Windows desktop and selecting the Standby or Hibernate options. But if you want to impress your Luddite pals, the Eco Button's the way to go. The thingamajig plugs into an available USB port on your PC. Jab the green glowing center and it automatically sends your computer into minimal power mode. Do it again and it brings the PC back on. You can even configure a password lock so your pesky neighbors won't "accidentally" access your computer.

What's more, this can help you save some money. According to online retailer Firebox, a normal user can save up to US$80 a year. That's about US$56 after you factor in the price of the device which costs US$24. Better yet, the Eco Button software has a tracker to help you keep watch on how much energy you've saved while AFK. That's away from keyboard, you noob.

Biodegradeable picnic ware disintegrates in your stomach

Damian Koh  |  Nov 06, 2008

Holidays are just around the corner and I'm pretty sure some of you are planning something special for your loved one(s). Do I hear picnic? If you are thinking of a romantic alfresco dining experience without the hassle of soiled utensils, you'll need the Biodegradable Picnic Ware.

For US$24 at Firebox.com, you get a set of picnic ware which comprises plates, beakers and bowls (four each) made from biodegradeable cassava fiber, a wooden cutlery set and tablecloth (choice of camouflage or gingham patterns).

The coolest bit about the picnic ware is that it's edible, while the wooden cutlery will disintegrate within a week if left in water, or decompose a few months down the road if buried. If this doesn't impress your other half, at least it'll reduce your carbon footprint.

GPS for bikes: Ask the Editors

Bonnie Cha  |  Nov 06, 2008

Garmin Zumo 550

Q: I am going to be a package delivery person and was wondering if there is a GPS for bikes to help me navigate the city [of Quebec]. I am looking for two features in the GPS system. I only know my destinations and would like to know the best way to get to them in the best time ever! And I want the system to be on a network that gets updated by users so it builds on its on core to be a better product. GPS on a network that is always updating itself to be more correct on street signs, as they change always, traffic, etc.--Dylan C. via email

A: Hi Dylan! First off, I'm not sure if you're talking about bicycles or motorcycles, but I'll cover both types just in case. If you're talking bicycles, finding a GPS to meet your needs is going to be a bit difficult. I've been doing a little research online, and a lot of the models available for bikes, such as the Garmin Edge 705, are more for training and logging your rides or workouts. Plus, they have a more outdoor/off-road focus rather than city navigation, so I'm not sure they're your best option.

Exploding bike lock: Interesting concept, questionable execution

Justin Yu  |  Nov 06, 2008

Something has gone horribly wrong
(Credit: Mike Lambourn)

As an avid cyclist, my biggest concern about riding my bike in New York City isn't king-size potholes, wayward pedestrians, or even the hordes of aggressive cabbies itching to smash me into gray matter, but rather the constant fear of getting my bike stolen. I've been a victim of bike theft in the past, and it literally feels like the loss of a limb (not good), so I'm constantly researching new ways to deter thieves from snatching up my precious Surly Cross-Check. Whether it's making my bike ugly with stickers or carrying around extra locks in my bag, there's only so much you can do, because if a thief wants what you got, they're gonna get it no matter what.
