Power: Anywhere, anytime

While I still love my iPhone 3G, we've hit some bumps in the road in our relationship. In particular its battery life, or lack thereof, depending on what I'm using it for.

I recall one instance in particular. After using the phone more than I usually do in a day, I went to bed without charging it. The next day to woke up to a dead phone. Luckily this was a Saturday morning, so I didn't particularly need it for the next few hours, but this could have easily happened on a weekday.

And there I'd be. On the bus, on my way to work with no way of checking my email or the news of what happened in the world while I slept. I shudder at the thought of it.

Ecosol has figured out that this is an area where they may be able to help poor guys like me. With their Powestick V2, this allows users to charge their USB compatible portable devices anywhere, at any time. Simply hook your USB compatible device and voila, instant juice.

IEA: World's energy use is "patently unsustainable"

Martin LaMonica  |  Nov 15, 2008
The International Energy Agency raised the alarm Wednesday with the release of its annual report, emphasizing that a revolution in the energy business is required to maintain economic growth and stabilize greenhouse gas emissions.

The IEA's World Energy Outlook 2008 report, written for policymakers, paints a troubling picture in terms of energy costs and global warming due to burning fossil fuels. It calls for "radical action" from governments at all levels and for a coordinated international response.

"Current trends in energy supply and consumption are patently unsustainable--environmentally, economically and socially--they can and must be altered," Nobuo Tanaka, the IEA's executive director, said at the release of the report.

Although softening demand has pushed the price for oil down recently, the rising cost of extraction, combined with declining productivity rates at oil fields, means that the "era of cheap oil is over," according to the report.

The IEA's annual report forecasts that energy demand will spike in the next two decades, driven in large part by fast-growing India and China. OECD refers to the 30 developed nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Mobigrip leashes replace fold-up calculator as No. 1 corporate giveaway

Justin Yu  |  Nov 14, 2008

Technology might be the only medium where smaller is always better, but it's starting to get ridiculous. I'm worried that my next cell phone is going to be the size of a sunflower seed. There's got to be a point where we finally decide that things need to start getting bigger, and Mobigrip thinks that now is as good a time as any.

Mobigrips, also known as "device leashes," aren't exactly at the forefront of tech innovation; it's essentially a circular hunk of plastic with adhesive on the back and a lanyard attached to one side. If you tend to drop or lose your tiny devices, the idea is that you can "install" a Mobigrip and physically tether your finger to your mobile phone, MP3 player, remote control, dog, boyfriend, or whatever object you deem utterly forgettable.

The Mobigrips exude the same universal appeal as the Hercules Hook or the classic Bedazzler. They're US$10 a pop (about US$5 too much, in my opinion) and come in a wide assortment of colors; you can even customize them with a personal design or even...a corporate logo! Finally, a give(throw)away to replace the infamous fold-up LCD calculator!

Flip Video rolls out new HD mini camcorder: The Mino HD

With Kodak and RCA putting out so-called HD versions of their YouTube-friendly mini camcorders, we knew it was only a matter of time before Pure Digital Technologies, the maker of Flip Video mini camcorders, put out an HD model of its own.

Calling it the "world's smallest HD camcorder," the US$229 Flip Mino HD looks identical to the standard-definition Flip Mino. It weighs just over 3 ounces, boasts 720p resolution, and has 4GB of memory that allows for 60 minutes of recording time. The release also says that the Flip Mino HD features "all-new built-in FlipShare software for easy saving, organizing and sharing of video from your computer." We're not sure how it's different from the software on the existing Mino, but when we get more details, we'll let you know.

Like the standard Mino, you'll be able to customize the look of the Mino HD at theflip.com/store. I did an earlier post on the whole customization thing, and the one drawback is that while the service is free, you do pay the full US$229 list price for the product. Most likely, the Mino HD will retail for less on Amazon and other online stores--I'd guess US$199.

Hi-Kara's palm-sized karaoke system

Juniper Foo  |  Nov 12, 2008

(Credit: Takara Tomy)

Meet the latest singing sensation from Japan, the Hi-Kara. Hot out of Takara Tomy's wonder emporium, this tiny karaoke cube measures 5.5 inches on all sides. Not quite pocket-sized, it's still portable enough to lug in your totebag for on-the-spot warbling, 24/7. A frightening thought, but for Stephanie Sun and Jacky Cheung wannabes, this 10,500 yen (US$107.50)device packs a usable enough LCD monitor to display the lyrics, a Web site to download songs onto mini catridges that you insert into the Hi-Kara, and ports for two headphones as well as to hook up to speakers and the telly. No mike bundled, so this looks to be only a two-party piping session.

With a new season of American Idol and the Singapore version of the hit singing game show Don't Forget the Lyrics about to air, this is as good a time as any to polish up your repertoire for a go at the prize money.
