SureFlap recognizes your pet via its RFID tag

Matt Hickey  |  Oct 09, 2008

I can't tell you how many times I've come home to find random cats that I don't know hanging around my house while my own cat is out doing whatever it is cats do. They waltz in through my pet door and make themselves at home, even helping themselves to my cat's Friskies.

That's why I'm considering the SureFlap, a secure pet door that only opens for the pet or pets that have approved RFID chips implanted under their furry skin. Any other animals, say the evil gang that likes to get its fur all over my couch, would be turned away.

This is a pretty high-tech solution for a low-tech problem, but if it's a situation you're in, then it's a perfect answer.

Umbuster brolly shields you from rain and assailants

Damian Koh  |  Oct 09, 2008

We are big fans of umbrellas here at Crave Asia and it's time we focus our attention on the skull-busting Umbuster after a long drought of brolly news. Unlike those that we've written about which are either concepts or DIY projects, the Umbuster by Sruli Recht is actually available for pre-orders now at US$330 and will ship this month.

But before you do anything silly brandishing one of these on the streets and getting arrested by the police for carrying an illegal assault weapon, read the accompanying legal warning:

"The Umbuster has been classified a Class 5 weapon by good and upright men and women of the Victorian Police, and is considered similarly so in many countries. To have and to hold this accessory requires a weapons licence and, or gun licence."

What can we say? Fiercest brolly, ever.

i-sleep for office naps

John Chan  |  Oct 08, 2008

Credit: Universitat der Kunste Berlin

Ever dozed off at your desk and woken up only to see a long line of rubbish letters on your text document, thanks to your cheek lying on the keyboard? Working when sleepy is a pain and this concept product, the i-sleep, seeks to make things a little better.

Here's the idea. When you feel sleepy, just close the laptop and this pillow will automatically inflate using air from the notebook vents. You can then safely take a short nap without worrying about oversleeping because an internal alarm wakes you up after 10 minutes. But based on what we know about laptops, we suspect their air vents probably won't blow out enough air to inflate the pillow, especially since most notebooks will power down everything when closed.

There's another problem it doesn't address, either: Bosses don't understand the concept that a 10-minute nap is not laziness, but in fact aids productivity. Though that doesn't really matter since this is just an idea for a school project and not a real product. But if they ever make an i-sleep that works, I know I'll be getting one.

One-handed grub for gamers

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 07, 2008
This just goes hand in hand with the Internet urinal, survival gear for World of Warcraft gamers fixated on outwitting, outplaying and outlasting their online opponents in their own Survivor hell. But even chalking up the body count in a virtual world requires real-life sustenance, just so you can do more of the same. Enter Gamer Grub which, considerately, delivers scientically formulated performance snack food to your energy and nutrition-starved body in a one-handed snackpod. Fortunately, this is said to be tasty, shipping in four action-packed flavors: Strategy Chocolate, Action Pizza, Racing Wasabi, and Sports PB&J a.k.a. peanut butter and jelly. The only thing missing is a D.I.Y. intravenous drip to make this a wholly handsfree experience.

Thumb drive + liquid = coolness

Dong Ngo  |  Oct 07, 2008

Not my personal choice of liquid, but... (Credit: CNK Promotions)

I wouldn't recommend putting your thumb drive in liquid. But how about putting liquid inside your thumb drive? Now that's cool.

That's exactly what CNK Promotions is offering. The merchandising company sells USB thumb drives with an acrylic body (PDF) that's hollow and can be filled with the colorful liquid of your choosing. The drives can be made with a customized logo or mascot printed on the case and offer storage space up to 8GB.

Another thing about the liquid-filled thumb drives is that they can float, which betters the chance of their being found when dropped in water. Whether or not they are actually water-resistant is unclear. However, thumb drives are known to be very resilient. (My last one died only after I let it run through the laundry process three times--by accident, of course!)

Personally, I think the 8GB capacity is a little small, but I would totally look past that if the drive is filled with gin or vodka. How about you?
