Swann FlashlightDVR: If torches and camcorders mated

The idea of gadgets being able to literally mate with each other and produce converged offspring is one which terrifies us as much as it excites us. Man-induced gadget mating can yield interesting results, too. Take the Swann FlashlightDVR--it's a torch with a built-in camcorder that can take stills and video footage.

Hyundai booth raided at German tech fair

The Hyundai IT booth at the IFA electronics fair in Berlin got some unwanted visitors on Saturday: German customs police.

Police seized flat-screen TVs from the South Korean company's booth as visitors watched, according to Reuters. The raid followed Thursday's German court ruling that Hyundai IT and other companies were planning to display unlicensed patented tech at the fair, Reuters said. A customs official told the wire service that 69 raids had been authorized.

The official wouldn't name the other companies but said about 170 TVs, 140 digital audio players, 21 cell phones, and 57 DVD recorders had been seized so far, Reuters said. The wire service said that Hyundai could not immediately be reached for comment.

IFA, which began Friday and runs through Wednesday, is among the largest consumer electronics shows in the world.

Singapore GP Season to start September 20 over three weekends

As part of the festivities leading up to the much-anticipated Formula One (F1) night race in Singapore, a series of F1-themed activities will be put together over three weekends (September 20 to October 5) to get fans and tourists revved up for the big race.

Called the Singapore GP Season, the main highlight is expected to be the Singapore River Festival which will feature performances from renowned artists such as Paul Anka and Jive Talking. There will also be the Singapore Beer Festival (October 2 to 5) with more than 300 beer brands from all over the world expected to participate.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of last year's Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen, he will be making a guest appearance at the Tag Heuer "Racing Legends of Our Time" exhibition (September 19 to 29). F1 fans can also get a chance to see an actual-size replica of the ING Renault F1 racing car at the team pavilion showcase over at the Singapore Marriott Hotel in town.

This being all about fast cars and cutting-edge automobile technology, there's also the Singapore Motorshow which will be held at the Singapore Expo from September 26 to October 5.

Titan Exhaust Air Jack blows hot

Where was this when my tire blew out on me, fortunately in a quiet neighborhood? Unfortunately, being a quiet neighborhood, help wasn't too forthcoming. So while twiddling my thumbs for over an hour for the mechanic to arrive, I had plenty of time contemplating the folly of the mini-jack which looks more like a weapon of mass destruction to the less mechanically inclined and isn't at all kind to manicured nails. To use, all you need is to connect the hose to your car's exhaust pipe, and this will inflate quickly to lift your vehicle up to 30 inches above ground. It will stay safely inflated for a maximum of 45 minutes, and will deflate in under 5 seconds. Too bad the sticker price is just as inflated, and starts pumping from US$120.
