Child locator for every parent

Ahmad Jamaluddin  |  Jul 08, 2008
One of every parent's greatest fears is to lose their child. In the blink of an eye a child could disappear from your sight. That's why the BrickHouse Locator, created by BrickHouse Security which specializes in security products, can make life easier for parents.

BrickHouse Locator comes in three parts: Handheld locator device, panic homing tag, and three mini homing tags. Attach the mini homing tags to your child or pet and set an allowed distance within which your child can roam up to 600ft (183m) outdoors, and up to 200ft (61m) indoors from your handheld locator. This range is called the safety zone. Once your child goes over the safety zone, the locator will vibrate to alert you. And if the child is in any danger, pressing the panic tag will send a distress signal to your locator.

The handheld locator will then lead you to the tag by using audio or visual directional guidance. It will vibrate faster as you get closer to your tag, just like searching for your hidden treasure.

You can purchase the BrickHouse Locator through the company's Web site at US$189.95. BrickHouse Locator is delivered worldwide.

Holy F1, Batman: The Batpod bike goes public

Ian Morris  |  Jul 08, 2008
We aren't going to make a secret of it: Of all the superhero films out this year, we're most excited about The Dark Knight. Sure, Iron Man was excellent, but after the first outing of the re-imagined man of bats we have high hopes for Christopher Nolan's new movie.

As luck would have it, we just happened (ahem) to be at the British Grand Prix practice session Friday, and we nearly soiled ourselves when we saw the new Bat bike there. It had been casually parked up against the Panasonic Toyota F1 trailer--we can only assume that the man himself was either enjoying a cup of tea or beating the snot out of thieves in the car park. How to train a horse without leaving the car

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 08, 2008
As Crave learned recently, there are some impressive technologies out there to train the novice equestrian. And now we've discovered that there are systems available for the beasts themselves--specifically, those trained to race.

Kurt Systems, which Gizmag describes as a "Turkish racehorse and camel training equipment specialist," has created a mobile racehorse trainer that basically looks like a car with a slot carved right down the middle for the animal and its jockey. This bizarre vehicle, modded from a Ford F150 truck and powered by a Volvo diesel engine, "provides a moving enclosure in which a horse can walk, trot, or gallop in a controlled environment" up to 60 kilometers, or 37 miles, per hour.

There's enough space in the vehicle for a crew of three and various health-monitoring equipment, as well as a silicone saddle that can simulate the weight of a jockey. And for those concerned about the animal's rights, Kurt's general manager says the company's equipment is "horse-welfare sensitive." That, however, doesn't speak to everything else involved in the training process.

Safety device for the urban survivor

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 07, 2008
If there's a gadget that symbolizes urban living, it might well be something like the "BodyGard Survivor."

As its name implies, this handheld item from Swiss Tech serves as a personal security device that will fire off a high-decibel sonic alarm and flash ultra-bright LEDs when activated by the panic button, according to Gadget Grid. The survivor half of the equation comes into play with its compass and hand-cranked generator, which can be used to power a cell phone or laptop that's gone dead.

Of course, depending on where you live, there are other alternatives that could be more appropriate (and effective)--such as the combination of an Avurt IM-5 and a whistle.

A security camera for Fido

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 07, 2008
Believe it or not, the idea of taking photos from a dog's point of view isn't new. What's different about this device, however, is that it's being done specifically for security purposes.

An obvious use for the "Pet-Eye View Digital Camera" is to see if your pet has been up to any mischief, but it also can be used to check for any other nefarious activities wherever your dog or cat goes, as 7Gadgets points out. The pet-cam takes photos throughout the day or night using a built-in automatic timer at intervals of 1, 5, or 15 minutes, and it can temporarily store the shots until you can download them onto a computer through its USB cable. And even if you find nothing suspicious, just think of all the fun you'll have secretly photographing the neighbours.
