BBQ multi-tool

John Chan  |  May 30, 2008

Remember that BBQ light we featured, the one that magnetically adheres to your steel utensils? That's yesterday's gadget. Here's the Grill TEK Griller's 6-in-1 Multi-tool, a device that could propel you to outdoor cooking greatness.

Aside from a knife, it has an LED light to check for doneness and a timer so you can keep track of how long that steak has been on the grill. When you are done cooking, there's a whistle to call everyone to the table and it even opens bottles in case you want a beer with that steak.

It's a pity the online store that stocks it, AJ Prindle, doesn't ship outside of the US. But, hey, it's the age of the Internet, so if you really want one, seek out one of those parcel forwarding services that ships to your country.

Drivemocion 2 has it all fingered out

Juniper Foo  |  May 29, 2008
Like the Love Bug, the Drivemocion is back with a sequel. This time, those unprintables you would have loved to have in the original Drivemocion are now available as animated messages. AU-MY has clearly had a change of mind from keeping it all sweet. Let's just say that one of them will either have you hitting the SOS button frantically or making a quick getaway from one very angry road hogger.
Fortunately, there are four other built-in messages--Happy, Sad, Cheeky, Flirting--allowing you to quickly appease (if possible) one potential road bully. Like the previous "flasher", this updated version (24.99 pounds or US$49.40) affixes to the inside of the rear car window using a power suction cup, and is operated wirelessly by a remote control fixed to the front windscreen. The main unit runs on four AA batteries which are said to last about four months. And so you still can't program any customized messages.

Evolta mascot's Fear Factor climb

Juniper Foo  |  May 28, 2008
Having just laid claim to being the first to have Guinness Book of World Records officially certify the Evolta as the "world's longest-lasting AA alkaline battery cell", Panasonic isn't resting on its laurels. The company has literally scaled mountains in a bid to substantiate that claim.

It tickles us to read about the Evolta mascot pulling itself up the rope of a 530m (1,739ft)-tall cliff in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, using its little plastic hands and legs, powered by what looks like two AA Evolta batteries. Though considering the 130g mechanical toy is just a wee 17cm tall, that's a lot of hard climbing to do; roughly 6 hours 46 minutes of rope burn. Another world record?

Disclaimer: The stunts described were designed and supervised by trained professionals. They are extremely dangerous and should not be attempted by any robot, anywhere, anytime.

If the TouchWall had a gambling baby brother

Mike Yamamoto  |  May 27, 2008
Let Bill Gates have his TouchWall. You can still be the envy of your friends with the Heads-Up Challenge digital poker table.

Unlike the iDealer or its mahjong counterpart, this one truly brings the game of champions into the Digital Age by using a large touch screen to shuffle, deal, calculate odds, and pay the winner. And get this: It will even let you peel up the cards, according to Chip Chick.

Unfortunately it can handle only two players--hence, the name, which refers to a one-on-one game. But it certainly beats that other wireless poker game, hands down.

SuperSmoker

Juniper Foo  |  May 26, 2008
Contrary to its choice of name, the SuperSmoker doesn't put hair on your chest or turn you into Marlborough Man. Instead, it's another variation on a theme to get smokers easing off those ciggies with a healthier, cheaper alternative (US$155 initial cost + US$16 per pack of six refills).

To allow puffers to continue mingling with the hardcore smokers, this electronic (yes, it's electronic) cigarette is dressed up to look like the real thang. Until you light up, so to speak. There's zero tobacco, zero smoke, and basically the nicotine shot you get comes from a cartridge containing liquidized food which gets vaporized in a chamber. To lessen the blow, this actually has a tobacco-like flavor and even emits a tobacco-like aroma. The only dead giveaway is when an LED at the tip of the device blinks to indicate the rechargeable battery is flat.

And just in case you think you can keep puffing, think again. There's an in-built electronic security system which shuts the device down for 30 seconds after 15 inhalations to reduce the amount of nicotine that can be taken in. For smokers turning over a new (tobacco) leaf, that has to suck.
