Oakley's Medusa headbanging thing

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 23, 2008

Great balls of subversion! Did Oakley set out to shock? This is just too weird-out not to mention in Crave. If there's segment of the demographics in Asia brave enough to strut around in this ridiculous headgear, we salute you. However, we'd suggest adding another US$250 for the snap-on leather goggles to make this a full-faced mask. That way, your mum/dad/neighbor/employer can't make out that it's you under all that leather dreadlocks and rivets.

Mind you, the Medusa Hat sans eyewear costs US$500 apiece, and doesn't even feature any MP3 options, unlike its Oakley Thumps. Fit only for the post-apocalyptic Mad Max fashion crowd.

Origami plane to make space flight

Damian Koh  |  Jan 22, 2008

Look, the only people who have the gumption to even attempt flying a paper plane from the International Space Station to Earth would be the Japanese. Look at how their lipless feline export is trying to take over the world and you'd know these folks from the Land of the Rising Sun are pretty serious when it comes to certain things.

The said plane developed by the University of Tokyo and the Japan Origami Airplane Association is reported to be 30 to 40cm long with a weight of about 30g. They've even made a 8cm long testing prototype with the ability to withstand a Mach 7 speed for 10 seconds, and up to temperatures of 300 degrees Celsius without disintegrating.

The problem is, the ISS has an altitude of 350 to 460km above the surface of the our planet, and initial velocities can reach up to Mach 20 when re-entering Earth, slowing down to a more digestable Mach 7 after breaking the atmosphere at 80km altitude. Takes flying to a whole new level, doesn't it? God bless the soul who's going to find the bird after it lands.

Alarm clock requires precision shooting to shut up

Damian Koh  |  Jan 21, 2008

Our editors are going to love this. Not because they can avoid being sitting ducks from the random stray missiles flying in the office, but rather that we will all be in time for work. The Laser Target Alarm Clock requires the sleepyhead to aim the laser beam at the center of the target to turn off the alarm. For added measure, there's no snooze function. Of course, there's no stopping us from removing the battery if it gets irritating. Either way, this aims to get you out of bed. Nasty.

Targus' singing backpack

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 21, 2008
Here's a pet peeve. There's nothing more irritating than someone thumping out music from a (insert: Boombox, speakerphone, stereo player) to the world at large as if they're doing us a huge favor. Reality check: In Asia, this constitutes being a public nuisance. Sometimes, one can get slapped with a hefty fine.

Having gotten that off the chest, here's something from Targus that audiophiles on-the-move may just go for. We spotted the SonicPak backpack with internal speakers at a CES event in Las Vega. This comes with two speakers and a lightweight amplifier that includes NXT "exciters", which are supposed to offer quality sound. Though given the din at the show, we weren't able to discern just how good this really was.

Zeiss does video glasses with the Cinemizer

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 21, 2008

There are so many makes and models of video glasses on the market that we lost count of them long ago. But one that was launched at Macworld this week may be worth mentioning, for the famous name associated with it if nothing else.

Expert photographers may debate the quality vs. hype of Carl Zeiss lenses, but the companies that use them in their products clearly think the brand packs plenty of marketing muscle--just ask Sony, which touts them every chance it gets for its cameras.

So it makes sense that the German company would want to cash in on that reputation directly with its Cinemizer.

The video glasses, which come with a wired remote, plays video from iPods and other media devices while projecting the virtual equivalent of a 45-inch screen from 78 inches away. But the best feature, as far as we're concerned, is that you can wear them over a pair of eyeglasses--turning us four-eyed individuals into six-eyed viewers.

If they would just add a built-in media player, we'd be first in line.
