Make a latte anywhere, even without electricity

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 25, 2008
Impossible as it may seem, some claim that there are actually places on earth where a Starbucks is nowhere to be found. We think this urban legend, but there's a new product that lends credence to this theory.

Handpresso's Wild is a portable gadget that can make espresso while camping or anywhere else, even where there's no electricity, because it's operated with a hand pump. Gizmag says it does need hot water, though, so be sure to carry matches unless you're traveling with a Boy Scout in need of a caffeine fix. As for us, we'll stick with the BMW.

What passes for bling in China

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 25, 2008
The tech industry's unfortunate bling factor has not escaped the overseas wholesale market. Case in point: Chinavasion, maker of so many multimedia watches, has come out with a "gold edition" of its own.

This timepiece, which can play music and videos on a 1.8-inch LCD, also has built-in Bluetooth so it can work with phones and other devices wirelessly, according to GeekAlerts. Yet this is China we're talking about, so don't expect Western luxury prices.

The top-of-the-line 4GB model of this edition comes in at US$103.87.

Then again, it probably isn't real gold, either--following another trend that country is known for.

World's first zero-gravity massage chair

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 25, 2008

Coming from a country where brands like Osim and OTO hold regular roadshows to promote massage chairs as alternatives to therapists, it's hard not to get the massage, ah, message. Now here's one we haven't yet heard--billed as the "world's first zero-gravity massage chair".

So what does the world's first zero-gravity massage chair offer? For your money, this claims to combine "incredibly realistic and therapeutic Human Touch massage with zero-gravity ergonomics". Apparently, as you rotate into the zero-gravity position, the pivoting Z shape cradles your spine in a stress-free position, elevates your legs above your heart for improved circulation, eases tense muscles, and increases oxygen intake by expanding lung capacity.

Lest your jaw drop with awe at such an amazing sales pitch, here's one to bring you right down to Earth's gravity. This one massages your wallet for a whopping US$3,995 that's similarly priced to Osim's everything-also-can-do health chairs. In short, seriously pricey and maybe even more painful than that chronic shoulder ache.

USB MSN Missile Launcher coming

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 24, 2008

As with all things tech, the next upgrade is always waiting around the corner. The Missile Launcher is no exception. Besides getting laser sight in one iteration, this latest update sports sight of another kind--a Webcam.

Just where this is going isn't clear, though. While the MSN features lets you hook up with IM pals, the launcher could work against you. If your nice buddies find a way to hack the program, they can commandeer your artillery, scan you out on the onboard Webcam, and basically nuke you unawares. Great if you're into pain therapy.

Hong Kong e-tailer Brando says this shoots up to 15ft "at an extremely fast rate". However, shipping will take just a tad longer as this US$48 weapon of mass destruction goes out only in February.

A multimedia helmet that's Gatorade-proof

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 24, 2008
If NFL teams continue to use technology on the field--legally or otherwise--you've got to wonder how long it'll be before they start using something like this.

The Multy LYNK helmet from Voz Sports would seem just as suitable for the battlefield as the gridiron, serving as both a multimedia device and communications tool. In addition to playing MP3s on its built-in stereo speakers, according to Gizmodo, it has a "two-way Family Radio Service radio with voice control and 14 channels (plus 38 privacy codes) or via Bluetooth".

We'd be dubious about the effectiveness of its noise-cancellation technology at venues like Lambeau Field during the playoffs, but the Multy LYNK does have a weather receiver and a waterproof finish to help survive the freezing tundra. And if your team happens to win, the helmet can be submersed in a liter of Gatorade for a full 30 minutes.
