Charger Bracelet: When games are your life

Mike Yamamoto  |  Oct 24, 2007

If you give an item like this any kind of consideration at all, it's probably a sign that you're spending more time playing games than with your loved ones. Actually, it may mean that you don't have any loved ones at all, or won't for very long.

Thanko's Charger Bracelet is designed for addicts who just can't put down their handhelds when the batteries run dry, supposedly providing another 4.5 hours for a PSP and 28 hours for a DS Lite with a recharger strapped to the wrist, according to Engadget. On the other hand, given the fashion statement that this will make, there'll be plenty of time for those games every Saturday night.

Jaywalking with a twist

Candice Lombardi  |  Oct 24, 2007
This bizarre invention seeks to solve the dilemma of the environmentally conscious walker surrounded by a world of drivers.

The Portable Zebra Crossing is a roll-up version of the pedestrian crosswalk. You lay it down across the street when you find a convenient crossing point instead of bowing to the "tyranny" of the regular system that requires "inconvenient diversions and wasted time," according to the International Chindogu Society.

While we often commit would never endorse jaywalking in a city, it might be a safer alternative to this option.

Jalopnik, who noticed this at the 2007 Tokyo auto show, points out that you'd still have to brave the traffic while laying down your claim. Though that's apparently not a problem for the lady in this photo, who seems to be traveling with her own crosswalk servant.

The smokeless electronic cigarette

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 23, 2007

We don't know about the "endless hours of enjoyment and smoking pleasure", but this little battery-powered gadget reminds us of the NicStic which is touted as a smoke-free alternative for the tobacco worshipper. Even if it's just lots of smoke and no fire, the good thing is this prevents noxious breath, stained teeth and pollution since you basically exhale smokeless vapor (do we hear gasps from the smokers corner?). Unfortunately, this does nothing to cut nicotine addiction since it now gives you carte blanche to puff away in smoke-free zones and packs flavored nicotine cartridges, with one cartridge apparently equal to two decks of ciggies!

Price: US$64.95 per kit, cartridges at US$10 per 5-pack
Availability: At Crown7 Web site
Specs: Battery recharger, two Lithium batteries, two replacement filters, pocket holder, case

10 affordable USB gizmos for X'mas

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 19, 2007

It's official. Hunting season (of the gift-giving kind) is open again. And much as it's vulgar to mention the M word, let's face it, that sad sack of a wallet (bonus? What bonus?) can't take a collective beating all at once. Your Christmas gift recipient wants a PlayStation 3? Take a hike, pal. Your newlywed friends hinting at a home-theater-in-a-box to deck the halls? What, you think grandpa prints money? Whatever happened to "all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth"?

But as Madonna used to sing, it's "a material world". So short of morphing from sweet Santa to stingy Scrooge, you can still have your log cake and eat it. The solution? Useful USB gadgets that won't break the bank. With almost everyone now owning a notebook or PC, you can't go far wrong with an addon that enhances or adds to the fun factor of your desktop system. Check out these 10 USB gizmos that should sit pretty under that X'mas tree without straining those purse strings.

1. USB-powered air darts
Just when you thought it couldn't get any sillier with USB-powered peripherals, this weapon of mass destruction puts you right at the head of the office rat pack. Operating the air dart is Q.E.D. Hook it up to your PC, and start firing with the aid of your mouse. All that's missing is a remote control for long-distance stealth firing. Shoot to annoy. Yeah, bring it on.

Price: US$38.99 for three darts with cylindrical base and included software
Availability: Kleargear
Basic specs: Software CD allows control panel to appear on computer screen, launcher about 7 inches high and rotates 180 degrees, missiles can project 45 degrees and shoot 5-8ft, requires AA batteries (not included)

2. Golf Launchpad USB Golf Simulator for PC
If your gift recipient's greatest golfing triumph is thwacking the green to bits, check out the Golf Launchpad. That said, be warned that it's seriously priced, and you might want to pool resources with friends or family members. Used together with a laptop, this USB golf simulator hooks into the bundled Tiger Woods PGA Tour from EA Sports, letting your golfing pal play on some of the world's best courses with his own clubs. There's even a swing analyzer, and the tethered ball is real enough to withstand the violent impact of clubheads. One good thing out of this: You can always borrow it to tee off.

Price: US$199 for PS2 edition; US$249 for PC/Mac
Availability: Electric Spin
Basic specs: 2.4m USB cable, netting and support struts, tethered real golf ball on precision pivot, tethered tee, custom developed turf (spare turf included), free EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Windows Edition, clubs or drivers should have a reflective surface to work with the Launchpad, plug-and-play

Akihabara, shop till you drop!

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 18, 2007

First stop, follow the signpost to Akihabara Denki Gai.
At last, I can finally say been there, done that. Having heard for so long about Tokyo's most famous magnet for tech geeks big and small, there's a certain tingle of expectation when one hops off at Akihabara subway station, and like Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, following (in this case) the yellow signpost which states quaintly: Exit for Akihabara Electric Town.

Exiting from Akihabara Station, you can't miss the Radio Kaikan Building with its bubble escalators.
Be warned, though. Travel guides list the area as a large population of stores selling all kinds of electronic, anime, and otaku (obsessive fan) goods. What Akiba, as the locals call it, really is is a giant outdoor electronics mall like nowhere on earth. For an idea of how big this Electric Town is, our much-vaunted Sim Lim Square would probably fit into just one of the many-storey computer buildings.
