Tabasco Grenade Holder

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 26, 2007

Tabasco, which has gone to infinity and beyond, having found its way into the space program menu, has like Harley-Davidson built an entire merchandising business around its one product. Amid the brick bracks sold is one that caught our fancy, and would probably appeal to those who like to spice up more than just their sauce. Check out the Grenade Holder (US$12.95), which fits onto a 2oz bottle, and should make meals or even social dining an explosively hot affair. Pass the grenade, er, sauce.

The Edge Brownie Pan

Eric Slatkin   |  Oct 26, 2007
It's a fact: Cool people like the crust of the brownies (the part you find around the edge of the baking pan). One can think of these as the patriots of brownies: just enough hard cookie edge before they meld into warm gooey goodness.

But in a conventional pan, unless you can secure a corner piece you're often left with one of those 'socialist' pieces. The Baker's Edge solves this dilemma with its innovative "no corner piece left behind" design.

The unique pan equals one rectangular 9 x 13 or two 9-inch round pans, and will get your brownies baked quicker than in conventional pans. Beyond the brownie, you can use it for cookies, cakes, lasagna-I'm even going to try it on my bubbe's kugel. Every order comes with a specially designed spatula and if you still aren't convinced, check out their sweet animated film. Just too bad Baker's Edge doesn't handle international orders outside of the US for now.

Splat Stan Drinks Coaster

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 25, 2007

Suck UK continues its irreverent designer homeware with drink coasters that put a tongue-in-cheek spin on everyday stuff we take for granted. In fact, we'd have loved to score a set of four, if not for the ouchworthy 7.50 pounds (US$15.35) per silicone rubber, which appears to come only in orange. Still, for the house-proud homeowner who loves the witty and wacky to impress guests with, this will go wickedly with the Hanging Harry Light Pull, Dead Fred Penholder and Voodoo Knife Holder for a cheeky themed collection.

"Gamer" shoes next, anyone?

Mike Yamamoto  |  Oct 25, 2007
As the consuming world still tries to figure out if it likes musical footwear it's probably a good bet that shoes designed to look like game controllers won't be a huge hit anytime soon.

It would be one thing if they worked remotely, kind of like DDR for Gears of War, but we're talking about a shoe--and nothing more--with a sole that's embedded with ersatz buttons resembling those of an Xbox controller. Shiny Shiny says the footwear, made by Heelys as part of its new "Gamer" line, will arrive on the market just in time for Christmas bundled with four free titles.

If you're an aging Boomer who's too old for games, you can always hold out for a CD-playing shoe.

LifeStraw water filter designed for developing world

Martin Lamonica  |  Oct 24, 2007
In way of tech conference swag, the LifeStraw is definitely unique.

Matthew Nordan, the president of nanotechnology firm Lux Research, delivered the morning keynote for his company's annual conference earlier this week where he talked about the disruptive potential of materials sciences.

Although he's working with very technical topic, Nordan puts on a good show. There was the nanonickel-covered ping pong ball that he tried unsuccessfully to crush with a hammer.

Then he brought out a bowl of muddy water that he got from a local woodland. This was nasty-looking water with lots of brown things floating in it.

And he drank it.

Nordan survived the episode by using a LifeStraw, a thick plastic straw the acts as a portable water filter. It was created by Danish company Vestergaard Frandsen for developing countries, where access to clean water is a serious problem and expected to get worse. The filter costs US$3.50 and lasts a year.

At the end, Nordan told everyone to look under there seats, where taped to the bottom of each was our very own LifeStraw. I don't actually go camping for days at a time, so I can't say I actually need it. Maybe I'll use it to show kids in the neighborhood what tech can do.

In any case, the product is available only for institutional sales. But at some point, it will be sold at retail.
