W00t! It looks like robots may soon infiltrate the nursing profession, besides the theater, catwalk and home. What's a little more offputting is that RIBA, the new Robot for Interactive Body Assistance, has a cuddly teddy bear cuteness. On the one hand, this probably makes the idea of a robot nurse that can malfunction and go rogue on you a la I, Robot less daunting. On the other hand, with our penchant for all things kawaii, this makes RIBA's integration and interaction with its human charges far more acceptable.

Shaped like a small flashlight, the Maptor concept from Korea is a tiny GPS device which displays its maps using a small built-in projector. So instead of having a backlit LCD, it can be made very compact because any flat surface can become its screen.
The controls on the Maptor include a simple on/off toggle and a zoom ring. Aside from GPS hardware, it also comes with Bluetooth for transferring maps into the device and is powered by batteries. See another picture and a video after the jump. Read more »
Mattel's i-Tag, a new augmented reality-based toy that comes with 'Avatar' action figures that will be released in October. Could this be the future of toys?

I have seen the future of toys, and it is augmented reality.
That was my conclusion Monday after seeing Mattel's i-Tags, new technology that will be included with action figures the company will make for "Titanic" director James Cameron's new film, "Avatar."
For those not familiar with augmented reality, it's an overlay of digital information or imagery on top of real-world objects. AR, as it's known, "is a field of computer research that deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data (virtual reality), where computer graphics objects are blended into real footage in real time," according to Wikipedia. Does anyone draw the line at this? With robots now taking over the fashion catwalk, it's only a matter of time before they can be engineered to run our lives and, heaven help us, in bed. No doubt, Thomas and Janet, two bots who apparently have been sucking lips since December 2008, are simply mimicking the action with some very clever and complex mechanisms.
Now, I'm a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica--where Cylons prove more human than their real counterparts--yet one can't help but be reminded of the apocalyptic fallout and near destruction of the human race brought on by embittered robots. Yes, embittered.

Motala walks on her new leg over the weekend.
(Credit: Friends of the Asian Elephant)
One of the best things about this job is getting to share stories that are
often totally friggin' awesome. This is one of those stories.
It doesn't start happily, though. Motala is a 48-year old former
working elephant from Thailand (she moved large trees for a living). In
1999, while wandering in the forest looking for food on her lunch break, she
accidentally stepped on a land mine left over from the Burmese-Thai war. The
mine destroyed her left front foot and most of the leg.
Though her owners tried to save the leg, it was eventually amputated below
the knee. In 2006, she got a temporary prothesis to help her learn to walk on
what would be a more permanent artificial leg.
