Cyber-shot, now in four colors

Damian Koh  |  Aug 02, 2006

Hey, apparently Sony didn't forget its math. The company has announced the "real" successor to the Cyber-shot T9--the Cyber-shot, er, T10. Except for an increase in resolution to 7.2 megapixels and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 1,000, everything else remains. That aside, this Cyber-shot will also be available in pink and white shades, a good eye relief from the usual black and silver.

In addition to the T10, Sony also unveiled the company's latest GPS unit (GPS-CS1) which is capable of recording the location and time of a picture from a satellite onto its internal memory. The GPS-CS1 weighs 55g (without battery) and is rated for 14 hours of battery life when used with Ni-MH rechargeable cells.

Good news is the GPS unit is compatible with the latest Cyber-shots, Handycam camcorders and the Alpha 100. According to Sony, the Cyber-shot T10 is slated to hit local stores end August, while the GPS-CS1 will be available from this month onwards.

Big Brother's watching

Damian Koh  |  Jul 31, 2006

There're many things you can't do in Singapore. For instance, you cannot prance around naked at home lest your neighbors catch you in your full glory. You also cannot leave bright yellow packages lying around in MRT train stations. Why?

Simply because by doing so, you can be considered a national security threat. Recently, surveillance cameras have a new home on selected trains and buses on our island-state. That's in addition to a whole list of similar cameras found in shopping malls, elevators and on the roads.

We'd like to think that it's all for the sake of enhancing public transport security. To prove that the remote-controlled cameras enclosed in a white box mounted on train ceilings do work, we did a little test. We whipped out our shooter to take some pictures (the one you see on the left) of this camera while pretending we're in some make-believe espionage mission to catch the attention of whoever's watching behind the unit.

Lo and behold, when we moved, the camera shifted and had its glasses trained on us. According to a Land Transport Authority (LTA) press release, these cameras have been in placed since June on selected public buses and MRT trains as a trial and are still at an early stage of development.

We understand that these measures are for security purposes to make Singapore a safer place to live in. We're just afraid that in the future, we'll have a camera peering above us in the toilet. Privacy? You might have to pay for it.

Nikon teases, tickles, whatever

Damian Koh  |  Jul 21, 2006

You go, Nikon. The camera manufacturer is running a teaser campaign which promises a more powerful and versatile 10.2-megapixel dSLR targeted at photo enthusiasts. Word on the Web has it that the Nikon could be a successor to the D70/D70s.

We hate to count, but if we're lucky enough, the launch of this new camera might coincide with the birthday of Singapore which falls on August 9. Until then, we'll all wait, just like everyone else.

Alpha pricing out at last

Damian Koh  |  Jul 19, 2006

We swear late afternoon lunches do wonders (recommended when your boss is also out doing late lunch). For instance, an email arrived in the inbox right after, miraculously bearing news that we wanted to hear--the local price of the Sony Alpha 100.

According to Sony Singapore, the Alpha 100 with the 18-70mm kit lens will cost S$1,799 (US$1,322.79).

We've also just been informed that the bundle with the 18-70mm and 75-300mm kit lenses has been adjusted downwards to S$2,099 (US$1,543.38) instead of the S$2,149 (US$1,580.15) we were told barely an hour past.

If it's just the body you want, that'll now be S$1,499 (US$1,102.21) after a price revision from S$1,599 (US$1,175.74), thank you very much.

Let your fingers do the… talking

Damian Koh  |  Jul 19, 2006

The folks at Microsoft's research labs could either be closet fans of Tom Cruise in Minority Report or they are really ingenious to come up with TouchLight--a technology that allows people to navigate computer images using their hands.

Ah yes, this is something which could make even Chief John Anderton (played by Cruise) turn green with envy (and at the same time, technologically impaired). People using TouchLight don't have to make use of special gloves, glasses or a headset, wrote News.com Ina Fried.

According to the report, Microsoft is licensing TouchLight to Eon Reality which would use this technology in its existing interactive products for the commercial, auto, aerospace and defense industries.

Though it could still be two to three years before this technology will be available to mainstream consumers, it's still good to know our fingers can do something other than type on our keyboards.
