US designer Cat Bishop is hawking some pretty cool modified cameras on Etsy.com which look like robots from the 1960s. Each limited-edition piece has other objects attached to it, such as a pool ball for a head and domino pieces for the legs.
Surprisingly, most of these snappers still work, but they won't top Miroslav Tichy who makes cameras out of trash. These robot cameras will serve well as decorative pieces for the avid camera collectors.
Each camera is named by the artist, signed and dated as well. Prices range from US$62 to US$66.
One gripe I have with electronic viewfinders (EVFs) is that they are usually low-resolution displays with slower response times. Also, their color rendition is typically not as good as LCD's. But Epson's newly developed EVF seeks to correct all the flaws, and the company states that this can even replace optical viewfinders (OVF).
Epson's new EVF will utilize a 1.44-megapixel TFT color panel made from high-temperature polysilicon. It measures 1.2 inches diagonally and has a color filter to prevent tonal breakup when viewing fast-moving subjects through the EVF. Read more »
Professional photographers often shoot with their cameras tethered to their computers so they can see the images on a larger display. However, when out in the field, the environment may not be suitable for resting your laptop on the ground or on rocky surfaces. In such cases, the Tallyn laptop deck may come in handy.
The attachment is like a tripod's ballhead and can be fixed onto most Manfrotto or Studio Titan tripods. It has an adjustable base to accommodate notebooks of various sizes up to 3.6kg, and the deck can be tilted to facilitate viewing angles.
As with most professional-oriented ballheads, the Tallyn laptop deck doesn't come cheap. It's priced at US$84.95 on the company's Web site.
Nikon today expanded its DX lens line by adding a dedicated macro lens for close-up photography .The new AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85 mm F3.5G ED VR II. A prime focal length macro lens is something DX format shooters have desired, from general shooters to Ebay sellers.
The new AF-S DX 85mm Micro lens focuses as close as 10.8 inches, with reproduction ratios up to 1:1. with its 127.5mm (35mm-equivalent) focal length, it allows for a good lens-to-subject working distance while doing close-up work, as well as being suitable for portrait and nature work. Read more »
For those waiting to see what Flip Video will have for the holiday season, the company is about to ship an upgraded, "premium" version of its MinoHD pocket camcorder for US$229.99.
In a nod to Apple, the new model is called the MinoHD, second-generation, and features a brushed metal body, double the internal memory (8GB vs. 4GB), a larger, 2-inch LCD, and an HDMI connection, though no cable is included.
Flip's designers have also rounded off the corners of the unit (it does look sleeker) and tweaked the FlipShare software package to include direct uploads to Facebook (MySpace and YouTube links were already available) and a new Movie Magic mode that takes your clips and automatically arranges them into a "movie."
Other than that, nothing else has changed. Like its older sibling, this model offers 720p video capture and two hours of battery life from its integrated lithium-ion battery. Flip Video has yet to add the electronic image stabilization or macro mode found on Kodak's Zi8, which also features 1080p capture. Read more »
