Besides the D300s and D3000 dSLRs, Nikon today also announced two new glasses. The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 ED VR II is an updated version of the Japanese firm's popular telephoto lens, and it features the use of seven ED glass elements and Nano Crystal coating to reduce ghosting and flaring. This lens is also implemented with Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet and smooth focusing, and has Vibration Reduction (VR) function to counter hand shake.

Kodak unveils EasyShare Z950 and M381

Rich Trenholm  |  Jul 30, 2009

Kodak is the Columbo of the camera world these days: Keeping itself to itself, apparently not doing much, then just when you think you're in the clear, it solves the case. Or, in this case, unleashing the EasyShare Z950 and M381.

Both 12-megapixel snappers, these new snappers couldn't be further from the rumpled, shabby Columbo. Kodak's styling is razor-sharp when it wants to be, and with its 10x zoom the Z950 is, to our eyes, way sleeker than many of the chunky compact superzooms it competes with.

With the launch last week of the Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR, we suggested the compact superzoom sector, dominated by the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ6 and TZ7, needed a name. So we're going to call them suprazooms. Catchy, no?

Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder features full-HD video recording

Mini camcorders are whipping up a storm these days and even marques such as Samsung and Sony have joined in the fray. But the brand which started it all is Flip, which was soon followed by Creative and Kodak. However, most of these pocket videocams can record at best only 720p-quality clips, which Flip soon trumped with the UltraHD that can captures 1080p videos.

Not to be ousted, Kodak today unveiled the Zi8, a mini camcorder which joins the rank of the UltraHD. Featuring 1080p video recording, the Zi8 also has face detection and image stabilization, as well as a 2.5-inch LCD and SDHC card slot for memory expansion. But what's interesting is the Facebook uploading option which optimizes the recordings for the social-networking site.

Techblog Engadget reports that the Zi8 will be available in September for US$180.

Ricoh unveils GRD III compact with fixed 28mm F1.9 lens

Leonard Goh  |  Jul 28, 2009

The Ricoh GRD series of compact cameras have been a popular choice among photographers who want a stealthy point-and-shoot that offers manual focus and exposure control. The Japanese company has updated this line with the GRD III and its optics should appeal to enthusiasts.

The 28mm fixed lens has a maximum aperture of F1.9 and shutterbugs who snap a lot of pictures at night will find this large lens opening useful. Besides the usual JPEG image format, the 10-megapixel camera is able to take RAW pictures and the 3-inch screen has been upgraded to a higher-resolution 920k-pixel display. Although this professional-oriented point-and-shoot records video at only 640 x 480 pixels, we're pretty sure its target audience won't mind.

Recently Apple has been shaking up the digital imaging space. There are persistent rumors that the upcoming line of iPods, probably coming in September, will have a camera and/or camcorder features. Indeed the iPhone is quickly becoming the "camera" of choice for photos on Flickr, and some are speculating that video-shooting iPhones (and possibly iPods) could hurt the Flip Mino and it's kind. Of course what many forget is that Apple isn't a newcomer to the camera market. In fact, the company released one of the first consumer digital cameras a decade and a half ago: The Apple QuickTake 100.

Codenamed project Venus, the Apple QuickTake 100 was launched at the Tokyo Mac World in February 1994, and available that May for US$749. It was made jointly with Eastman Kodak and built by Chinon Industries. Kodak's self-branded version had already been on the market for over a year. Fully automatic and sold as an easy-to-use digital camera for consumers, one of the first available.
