Adobe Lightroom now supports Nikon D3X

Stephen Shankland  |  Mar 04, 2009
PMA 2009
LAS VEGAS--Adobe Systems has released the final version of Lightroom 2.3, its photo-editing and cataloging software, along with its close relative, the Camera Raw 5.3 plug-in to let Photoshop CS4 edit raw images from higher-end cameras.

The new software (available as a download for Windows and Mac OS X) supports Nikon's top-end D3X, an US$8,000, 24.5-megapixel machine whose owners likely will usually prefer raw files for their flexibility and quality advantages over JPEG. Also supported is Olympus' new midrange E-30.

The Lightroom 2.3 update also fixed a number of bugs and adds support for eight new languages: Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Korean, and simplified and traditional Chinese. Adobe made the announcement Monday just as the Photo Marketing Show (PMA) was getting under way here.

The Camera Raw software works with Adobe's flagship CS4 version of Photoshop, but also with the consumer-oriented Photoshop Elements 7, Premiere Elements 7 for video editing, and Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac OS X.

LAS VEGAS--Apple on Monday added support in its software for RAW image files from Nikon's top-end dSLR, the US$8,000, 24.5-megapixel D3X.

Apple's Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.5 also adds support for Epson's Epson R-D1x digital rangefinder camera, according to the Apple support page.

The software enables Aperture 2, iPhoto '08, and iPhoto '09 to interpret the cameras' raw files, proprietary formats that include more information than JPEGs. The update requires Mac OS X 10.4.11, Mac OS X 10.5.3, or later.

A full list of Apple's RAW image support is available on Apple's support site.

Aperture's competitor, Adobe Systems' Photoshop Lightroom, also got D3X support Monday, which is eve of the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show here.

LAS VEGAS--Having trouble attaching your camera to the outside of your plane? Delkin Devices announced a new product, the Fat Gecko camera mount, that could take care of your needs.

The US$89.99 device has two large suction cups to hold cameras as heavy as 2.7kg, company Chief Executive Martin Wood said at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) trade show here. The US$89 device is strong enough to hold a camera on a plane going 322km/h, he said.

The company is also working on two other versions of the device, one with two straps for attaching cameras to larger tubes such as Harley-Davidson steering gear, and one with a clamp to attach to tubes such as bicycle handlebars measuring 2.5cm to 4.8cm in diameter.

The devices can be repositioned flexibly through a double-knuckle adjustment mechanism, Wood said. The steel-frame Fat Geckos use a standard tripod screw for attaching any camera.

New Pretec CompactFlash card gets superfast

PMA 2009
Pretec, a maker of CompactFlash cards including very high-capacity ones, on Tuesday brought the speed of CF cards to a new high.

The company unveiled what we believe to be the world's first CF that offers speed up to 666x, which translates to about 100MBps. This is about four times the speed of a typical CF card and getting close to the theoretical maximum speed of the CF specification, which is 133MBps.

(To further increase the maximum speed of CF cards, the CompactFlash Association has released the new generation of the CF specification, called CFast, which breaks the 133MBps speed limit by using SATA II architecture that allows for speeds of up to 3Gbps while keeping the small and popular original CF mechanical form factor.)

The new Pretec 666x CF card will come in metal housing with a ruggedized construction. Pretec says the new card can resist impact and shock and is at least 10 times more durable than a typical CF card.

The new CF card comes in capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB and will be available in April. Currently its pricing is unclear.

Panasonic unveils HD version of the Lumix G1

PMA 2009
Last year when Panasonic introduced the Lumix DMC-G1 at Photokina, the company also said there would be an updated version of the shooter which can record HD videos. What it didn't say was when it would be announced. But now, the lid has been lifted off the new shooter at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) tradeshow held in Las Vegas this week.

The Lumix DMC-GH1 follows the footsteps of its predecessor, meaning it is also utilizing the Micro Four Thirds technology. While still image capture specifications remained largely unchanged, Panasonic has included some very interesting video features to the snapper.

Initially we thought the new shooter could capture only HD videos (1,280 x 720 pixels), but the Japanese firm surprised us with its implementation of a full-HD (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) video-recording feature in the GH1. Till now, only the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, PowerShot SX1 IS and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 are capable of performing this function.

We think the GH1 is targeted at a more video-centric crowd because on the rear is a dedicated button which switches into clip-recording mode when pressed. Also, we've spotted a stereo microphone on the top of the camera. For fussy shutterbugs, there is even a 2.5mm stereo jack if you want to use an external microphone.

To allow more creativity in videos, users can manually change the shutter speed and aperture settings while recording clips. This lets you film high-speed action scenes or create different depth-of-field effects.
