Specifically, the update to iPhoto '08 and Aperture 2 means that the photography software can deal with raw images from three prominent new digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras: Canon's midrange EOS 50D, Nikon's video-enabled D90, and Sony's ambitious 24-megapixel full-frame Alpha DSLR-A900.
Also supported is Nikon's high-end compact camera, the Coolpix P6000.
Raw images are taken directly from higher-end cameras with no in-camera processing into a JPEG. That means photographers get more flexibility when it comes to exposure, white balance, sharpening, and other options, but also that photos require manual processing. Read more »
Adobe plans new options next week to give its Photoshop.com a bigger social destination and to help the service stay in sync with people's computers.
Photoshop.com can be used to store, edit, and share photos, but today those activities happen largely in isolation. That will change November 11 as the company releases an AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) application called AIR Uploader that will let people synchronize photos stored on their own computers and on the online photography site, Adobe said.
Another change will let site members import address books from Google's Gmail, Microsoft's Hotmail, and Yahoo Mail so that photos can be sent to family members or other contacts more easily. And another social dimension will come with the ability to sign up to receive updates whenever contacts add new photos. Read more »
Customized belt buckle for a holiday gift? Picture credit: Kimbra Studios
Usually, we display our favorite pictures on the wall, properly framed and large enough to be a talking point when visitors drop by. However, Kimbra Studios has a rather innovative way for you to showcase your latest works.
At the PhotoPlus Expo held in New York, the company showcased its technology to imprint photographs onto personal accessories such as bracelets and belt buckles. All you have to do on its Web site is to select the type of jewelry you like, upload an image and, within two to three weeks, the finished product will arrive in your mailbox. The process sounds simple enough, but we find this service a little too pricey for our liking. The most affordable item, a mobile phone charm, will set you back US$14, while the most expensive, the bracelet, costs US$260.
With Christmas just around the corner, I guess this will make a great holiday gift for loved ones.
Is this the rear of RED's speculated dSLR? Picture credit: RED
RED founder Jim Jannard is teasing fans by releasing images which point to a new dSLR in the making. Although the company is probably more well-known for its high-quality video cameras, the line between still cameras and their video counterpart was blurred when Canon released the EOS 5D Mark II which is capable of capturing 1080p-quality clips.
Jannard didn't reveal much on RED's online forum but did mention that "things are not as they seem. They are better".
If RED were to launch a digital still camera, it probably would have to work with another big brand such as Canon or Nikon to use the lens mount and optics. However, there is also a chance that RED may sell this technology to another company to be incorporated into future units. But knowing the company, it is highly unlikely, though we wouldn't discount this option.
With camera rails and rigs already manufactured for Canon, it goes to show how much importance the industry is placing on this technology. Surely RED will want a piece of the pie and, fortunately, we don't have to wait long before the company makes the announcements.
Cagic is new to the digital photo frame arena and its claim to fame--or at least its marketing pitch--is that it's keeping things simple while making a frame that's more stylish and better constructed than your typical digital photo frame.
The company's first offering, an 8.4-inch diagonal model that comes in three finishes (birch, mahogany, and black), has been designed by "a European-trained interior stylist using quality materials and passionate attention to detail." Silly marketing phrases aside, the Cagic frame does live up to its billing as being well designed and stylish.
