Flickr and Getty Images team up

Leonard Goh  |  Jul 11, 2008
Now's a good time to sign up for a Flickr account if you haven’t done so already. One of the world's largest image banks, Getty Images, has entered into a partnership with Yahoo's Flickr to access all the public images hosted on its site.

So if your shots catch the eyes of Getty's editors, you may soon get an email from them for permission to license and sell your snaps. This could possibly translate to a long-term working relationship with the company and your cash machine would be ringing non-stop.

According to Jonathan Klein, co-founder and chief executive of Getty Images, the firm charges about US$500 to US$600 for the sale of an image used for commercial purpose, and the photographer gets about 30 to 40 percent from the sale.

Don't mind me, but I need to fill up my Flickr album right now.

Is Microsoft trying to outwit Adobe's Photoshop?

Leonard Goh  |  Jul 09, 2008
According to blogger Robert Scoble, Microsoft is hosting a photography summit this weekend at its campus in Redmond, Washington. It may seem a bit puzzling: Why would the biggest software company in the world want to meet up with photographers?

Scoble speculates that Microsoft may be introducing its new imaging software named Photosynth to shutterbugs then, and hopefully gain some insight on what makes the new software click. He also commented that Photosynth may be going head on with the industry standard Adobe Photoshop.

With Bill Gates out of the picture, is Steve Balmer looking to target a segment of the market that was previously untapped? Analysts in the company should know that for years, designers and creatives have been working on Apple machines, and to convince them to switch system will require more than just a fanciful program. It has to be an entire set of applications like Adobe Creative Suite which work as well, if not better.

It isn't that I am a loyal Adobe user who can't be persuaded to switch to a new image-editing program, but that I just can't be bothered. Why fix something when it ain't broke?

Kodak's 50-megapixel medium-format sensor

Lori Grunin  |  Jul 09, 2008
You thought Sony's 24-megapixel CMOS was high-res? Well, as Kodak's announcement of a 50-megapixel CCD shows, there's always room for more--pixels, that is.

Granted, that's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Sony's chip is designed for full-frame dSLR cameras, those with a sensor the size of a 35mm film frame (24 x 36mm), which generally go into pro-level handheld cameras. In contrast, Kodak's KAF-50100 CCD is 49.1 x 36.8mm, for medium-format digital photography which tends to be used more by commercial and fine art photographers in studio settings. The KAF-50100 is only the latest in Kodak's line of high-resolution medium-format CCDs. For instance, it joins Kodak's 39-megapixel KAF-39000 in the lineup, which now becomes the second highest-resolution sensor for non-scientific imaging. Hasselblad recently announced the H3DII-50, a camera based on the 50-megapixel CCD, in addition to its older 39-megapixel H3DII-39. Professionals fork over upwards of US$30,000 for models like these.

Hasselblad's bank-breaking 50-megapixel camera

Leonard Goh  |  Jul 08, 2008
Just how many megapixels are necessary? While most of us will stop at 12, there are individuals who never stop pursuing the ultimatum in resolution for digital photography. In this case, the Hasselblad H3DII-50 should satisfy them for now.

This beast churns out a 150MB TIFF or 65MB RAW file each time you fire the shutter, and it will rattle on at 1.1 frames per second until your CompactFlash card or tethered external hard drive runs out of space (very quickly). If you think a full-frame dSLR has a big sensor (36 x 24mm), this shooter will blow you away with its full-frame medium-format chip from Kodak which measures 36 x 48mm. Coupled with the Swedish company's advanced image-processing engine and algorithms, be prepared to see details in shots you wouldn't have noticed at the scene itself.

Targeted at studio and commercial photographers, the HD3II-50 costs US$37,000, which is what normal trigger-happy folks like us dream about every night. Hey, I don't even make that much a year!

A security camera for Fido

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 07, 2008
Believe it or not, the idea of taking photos from a dog's point of view isn't new. What's different about this device, however, is that it's being done specifically for security purposes.

An obvious use for the "Pet-Eye View Digital Camera" is to see if your pet has been up to any mischief, but it also can be used to check for any other nefarious activities wherever your dog or cat goes, as 7Gadgets points out. The pet-cam takes photos throughout the day or night using a built-in automatic timer at intervals of 1, 5, or 15 minutes, and it can temporarily store the shots until you can download them onto a computer through its USB cable. And even if you find nothing suspicious, just think of all the fun you'll have secretly photographing the neighbours.
