Casio lets YouShoot and YouTube your videos

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 06, 2007

Casio's new compact camera is lauding YouTube, and it's not necessarily a strange thing since digital stills and videos are becoming increasingly common bedfellows in most electronic devices.

The deal

The Japanese camera maven also announced an agreement with YouTube the same time it launched the EX-S880. Casio calls this its effort to directly engage the YouTube community. We took that as a hint that there's a viral video of the EX-S880 running round on the video-sharing site, but we were wrong.

Sony's new Alpha for amateur shooters

Lori Grunin, Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 06, 2007

Although it made its unofficial debut under glass at last winter's PMA show with naught but "Sony's amateur dSLR" to identify it--and an equally and still mysterious big brother by its side--Sony's Alpha A700 finally gets a name, US pricing, and some specs today.

The long-awaited (at the very least by Konica-Minolta diehards) midrange dSLR incorporates Sony's latest 12-megapixel CMOS chip. Unlike most other sensors, this new model performs its analog-to-digital conversion on its chip, rather than in the imaging pipeline, which Sony claims delivers better control over image noise.

Sony almost launched the Alpha 700 dSLR

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 06, 2007

The takeoff's not imminent. A Sony UK microsite "accidentally" revealed the existence of Sony's next-generation dSLR, but took it down immediately after the blogosphere began spreading the news (and hyperlink).

Call us conspiracy theorists, but we've a nagging feeling that it's a deliberate strategy on the Japanese firm's part to draw media attention to its products, guerilla style.

It was the same case with the Cyber-shot H3 when Sony's Canadian site made the leak.

Engadget, a technology blog, reported the new dSLR will sport a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, maximum ISO of 3,200, 11-point autofocus, and wireless flash support.

At press time, Sony Asia declined to comment on the Alpha 700. However, based on our experience, it is highly probable that the new dSLR will be officially announced within the next day or two.

Black beauties: The new camera pack

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 05, 2007

The frenzied activity is drawing to a close. The camera launches are almost over. And in a straw poll we conducted, black still seems to be a favored color--almost every new camera is available in the shade of midnight. In tribute to that mad rush, here's a handy roundup of the new stallions that just galloped into the stable.

Superzoom Kodak

Phil Ryan, CNET.com  |  Sep 03, 2007

If you're a fan of Kodak, or a cryptologist, you shouldn't have any trouble figuring out that the company's new superzoom, called the Z812 IS, is an 8-megapixels camera with a 12x optical zoom lens and optical image stabilization. The name won't tell you that the camera has a 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD screen, or that the camera can capture MPEG-4 video, with stereo sound at up to 1,024x720 pixels and 30 frames per second.

Kodak seizes on this last fact to say in its product literature that the Z812 IS can capture 720p video. The only problem is that the last time I checked, the generally accepted standard for 720p video is 1,280 x 720-pixels.
