Tolne camera: Throwback to the old retro

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 28, 2007

Nostalgia has a new home. With retro fashion gaining a bit of traction on the catwalk, Takara Tomy must be thinking: "Ah so!" These new plastic cameras use not digital memory cards but good old 35mm film. But the design screams cheap rather than chic. Ok, perhaps that's subjective, yet at US$35 for a camera with a limited feature set, it ain't dirt cheap, either.

Another virtually similar BenQ camera

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 27, 2007

Dear BenQ,

If you must know, the fall season of camera launches is over. So how come the new cameras? Or more precisely, how many more are there still to come?

Besides its very marginal improvements (8-megapixel vs 7-megapixel; SDHC support), the C840 is virtually the same as the C740i and the C640 before that, right down to the dimensions and the weight. But then again, based on the specs comparison, it's probably a good call to announce it when things are quiet on the camera front.

Yours,
Unimpressed reviewer

BenQ improves on the T700... barely

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 26, 2007

Hmm, what's this? After the torrent of camera launches in the past two months, we thought we could finally kick back a little and play around with the new cameras in the lab. But no, BenQ had to drop in with a higher-spec T800, right after the T700 made its debut a few months back.

So what's new? Well, not much. It's the same body with same dimensions. Minor differences are the higher megapixel count (8- vs 7.2-megapixels), a larger touchscreen LCD (3 inch vs 2.5 inch), more light sensitivity (ISO 6,400 to ISO 1,200) and support for SDHC in the T800.

Right after the dismal review that the T700 received for its poor low-light performance, the ISO 6,400 setting on the T800 ought to help bolster its score in the next round of reviews.

The T800 will be launched in Thailand by Q4.

Masking woes? Simplify your life with a Fluid Mask

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 24, 2007

That fancy masking software we last saw at CeBIT has been improved yet again. Now you can save your edge detection settings, activate localized edge blending (great for etching out hair) and seek aid with an improved help feature (hugely important since Fluid Mask 3 does have a learning curve).

But the US$239 price tag for this software comes with an additional cost of owning a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS2, CS3 or Elements as well. Yes, Fluid Mask 3 is available mainly as a plug-in, and no, it does not support non-Adobe photo-editing programs as yet, though Vertus has plans to do so for version 3.1. However, there's a silver lining if you work with TIFF and PNG files--Fluid Mask 3 can work in standalone mode for these image formats.

Olympus E-410 v1.2 firmware upgrade available

Matthew Fitzgerald, CNET.com  |  Sep 20, 2007

Olympus has released a new firmware update to its 10-megapixel E-410 dSLR with Live View mode. This firmware update, v1.2, corrects several issues with the camera's operation. The improvements in the previous firmware versions are included in this most recent update as well.

We generally recommend installing the latest firmware updates for your camera so you can get the most out of your gear. For more information on firmware updates for a specific camera, visit the manufacturer's Web site. Before installing any firmware upgrade, always take the time to read through all of the documentation and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
